A Little More About Us (part II)

In which I give you the (albeit, brief) history of SCS, so that I can tell you a bit more about where we're going.

Note: this article started out as a simple attempt to explain more about what's in store for SCS in the days ahead, but has since grown to epic, book-length proportions. I'm presenting it therefore as a series of articles. Yesterday, in part I, I explained a little more about what we're attempting to do with the gallery this month.

A little history
Let's go back to the very beginning, and we'll see how long and drawn out I can make this.

Splitcoast the site was started nearly three years ago by Daven (that's me) and Tracy Nolta. I've worked for the last 10 years as a designer and programmer of multimedia software and web sites; Tracy besides being a long-time SU! demo is also an elementary school teacher.

Tracy was looking for a better way to support her downline of demonstrators both in the Northwest and also back east (from a two-year period that we lived in Erie, PA). She had chosen 'Split Coast Stampers' as her SU! group name, representing her family of demonstrators both here and back in Erie, so we went with Splitcoaststampers as the name for the site.

I looked on the web for stamping-related sites that I assumed must be out there somewhere, and was amazed by what I didn't find. I found many, many sites devoted to scrapbooking, and some good stamping sites, but no stamping sites with the community aspects that I was searching for.

I wanted our site to feel comfortable, and be a place where people could find inspiration and timely information. Because computers and the web can often feel impersonal, I also wanted to promote a community feel to the site and to let people see that real people created and managed it.

Good design is important too. For Splitcoast that meant a lack of clutter and distraction, easy to find your way around (still working on that one!), no ads that are distracting or annoying, and a friendly personality.

Launch
The site launched in early 2003 with Tracy's downline and friends as our first members. We had registered the splitcoaststampers.com domain name in October, 2002 (October 1, as a matter of fact; happy anniversary to us!) and then needed several months before we had enough of the site in place to be able to welcome registered members.

I did everything related to development and maintenance, and it was quiet around here. Tracy and I populated the gallery with scans from swaps, pictures from events, and her own creations. We began getting a few uploads to the gallery as word got out just a little bit.

Membership grew gradually (we've never spent a penny to promote Splitcoast, anywhere) and before long we were getting daily gallery submissions. Still almost no forum postings though, and I openly worried about it in some of my early posts. I could have told you exactly how many members we had on a given day, and I often sent personal messages as new members joined.

Acorn
Like the little acorn that slowly grows, we began getting more and more "regulars" to the point where some days we had up to 30 members online at any one time, and hundreds throughout the day. I was thrilled!

I began hearing from our members almost daily with comments and questions, including quite a few from one of our most prolific uploaders at the time - Beate. That eventually lead to Beate doing tutorials and helping out with gallery approvals and bringing her friend Jennifer Balcer along too.

Jenn relieved me of day-to-day management of the gallery, and we turned off the automatic e-mails that notified one of us each time a new card had been uploaded - they were starting to fill up the inbox!

The wild, wild web
Early on, the site was run on a shared hosting plan, no different than any other of the millions of sites on the web. By February of last year we'd outgrown the available hosting plans that our service offered and I moved the site to a new provider.

Our traffic continued to grow, and on April 1, 2004 I received a note from customer support at our new provider. "Unfortunately it appears that your site is using more than your fair share of system resources on your hosting machine...we need you to trim down your usage considerably." I looked for an "April Fools!" at the end of the message. Not there! I contacted them, incredulous. This was a little site done in my spare time, it couldn't possibly be the culprit in "consuming too many resources", could it?

They suggested something called a "dedicated server". Well, yes, I'd love to have my computer be "dedicated", sir. Yes. That sounds wonderful.

I contacted Tom and begged him to help me figure out what to do. But the choice was already inevitable. With my provider threatening a complete shut down of our site, we took the leap and moved to a dedicated server. Our own computer, dedicated to running nothing but splitcoaststampers.com? How cool was that? Our problems were over! Yeah, right.

Part three: Family? Oh yeah, I have a family!

(Sorry Jan, but) This is better than the Tearing Edge! I can't wait until tomorrow to "hear" more!

this is fascinating reading. cant wait for part three. you all sound sooo down to earth. you have a family? you have time for a family? (just kidding) this is a great site for inspiration, for those of us who are afflicted with *no artistic talent whatsoever.* am afraid to figure out how many hours a week i spend on coastal (what my sister and i have nicknamed this site) - i would be horrified. keep up the good work - as i said, cannot wait for part 3!!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!! Loved reading how you got started, with Boonie the first! I knew Beate (sounds like Miata) and Jenn (my go-to-gal!) were in deep, but not that they had been in since the beginning! All this time I thought Daven, da Man!, worked for Mr. Bill in the Evil Kingdom. Daven, tonight is Dan Appreciation Night! Wish I could go, but I'll be listening on line while I cruise SCS! Thanks for everything!

WOW!!! After reading all you've gone through, I want to thank you SO much for not just giving up. THAT, surely, would have been the easy thing to do. SCS is an incredible site. Since I've come here, I don't go anywhere else. And... yes, word of mouth is what makes this site so popular. EVERYWHERE I go people know of, and LOVE, SCS. I find we share our "SCS screen names" just like people do with their Instant Message names. Any other stamping sites I have visited, it's been just that, a 'visit'.... I don't usually save them to 'Favorites'. And, the ONLY magazine I subscribe to is Paper Crafts. I have never been SO charged up for stamping, and LOVE the fact that this site primarily features (but doesn't necessarily limit you to) S/U sets!
I do hope my little "thank you" reaches your eyes!

Happy Anniversary, Splitcoast!

I don't know what I would do for inspiration without your site... it is such an incredible resource to share ideas within our stamping community.

Thank you!

This is a FANTASTIC sight and I must be an addict...I'm having withdrawl pains-BAD. I can't view any of 'my favorites' or any new and wonderful cards. How do I pay at this point? I hope I don't have to wait until Nov. to pay and view again?!!! This is a must have.

Thanks for everything! I'm looking forward to the next installment. BTW, I don't really remember what I did with my time before I discovered SCS...

Quite the cyber-adventure, eh?! I remember when I first stumbled onto SCS, and truth be told, in my chats with the "owner" of the site, little did I know that SHE was actually HE, DAVEN!!!!

I remember thinkin', well, there just isn't too much action goin' on around here . . . I made a mental note to check back a year later, and if you coulda' seen my face when I did . . . (head wagging in disbelief).

Well, I moved right in . . . LOLLOLLOLLOL! ;^)

Happy Anniversary!
What a great story!!! I remember when I found this site (back in August/September '03). It looked so full of ideas and, well, it just seemed friendly. I posted to the forum asking if someone in Minnesota could join (since I didn't live on a coast!). ROTFL - how naive I am sometimes.
Anyway, Thanks Daven and the whole SCS team!!

I have been a member on this site for a few months. It has given me so much inspiration that I cannot thank you enough. Great job to all that are involved in this site. I appreciate the background to this site. It should be kept for all the new folks to this site access. Again thanks for all your hard work....

WOW ! Happy Anniversy ! You guys are the greatest. I work in a small but great stamp store. When new stampers come in and ask how to go about finding ideas for stamping, there is only one web site I give out. YOURS. It offers everything for the newies and yet so much for us oldies. Keep up the great work. Oh yes, can't wait for the nest installment. Can;t you feel the love??

I have received more ideas from this stamping site than any other on the web. Everyone is helpful and willing to share their ideas, advice, and their experiences. I LOVE Split Coast!! Congratulations on a job well done... Happy Anniversary.

I joined last year - Oct. O4. are the dues ANNUAL? I don't remember seeing that they are. If not, they should be, that would bring in a lot more money. I, for one, wouldn't mind paying annually for such a great web site! good luck on your upgrades!

Ok part 2 was Fri... it's now Mon... I'm going through withdrawls waiting for Part 3...I can't wait...

Ditto, I am having withdrawls too. Daven, Tracy thank you so much for creating and keeping this site alive. SU needs to take lessons from you two. My guess is that the SU site isn't visited nearly as much as it was before SCS.

This is more interested than the best selling I'm reading. I'm on the edge of my seat for what happens next! I always "knew" you guys did a lot, but this is really bringing it home for me. We are lucky to have you guys care so much!

Daven & Tracy, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do. I found SCS from a demo that mentioned it on the SU discussion forum. I've made great friendships at SCS and gotten incredible ideas. Mahalo from Hawaii.
