More glass etching. To check out how I did this look at my gallery. Directions are listed on the Etched snowflake mug and cookie jar.
This is a plate that I did last week for my Christmas Gifts class. I wanted to show two ways to glass etched . . . both positive and negative etching. I combined the embossing method (for the deer) with the template method (using the snowflake punch punched into a plain label sticker). The results were awesome and everyone had fun.
Also, in this sample I've used a gold foiling pen to add a gold edge. The bad thing about doing this is that the edges on cheap plates may have little defects (uneven edges) and they will become evident when highlighted with the gold edging.

How did you get your etching in the circle only? What did you use to mask off the edges. I have tried this 2x now and I can't get mine to look that perfect!

Well, to answer your question about how I got it in a "perfect circle" . . . I just free handed it by following the inside edge of the plate. You can cut a mask using contact paper but I don't posses enough mathematical skills to easily figure out the circumference of the circles so I just "wing it." I would suggest making a mask though if you are having trouble with free handing it. And what is so cool is that once you've made the contact paper mask you can save it to use at another time. Pretty cool, huh!
How about I make one for everyone's hutch. ;) Seriously though, etching takes a bit of practice but I would say it's fairly easy to do. I've etched with loads of people through the years and I'd say 80% turn out perfect on their first attempt. The other 20% refine their skills and do just fine on the next project or two.
