Very cool idea---I have not seen this technique and can't quite figure it out. As for the white, I would agree that there is too much. What about sponging another color around the images or even speckling (sp?) the white part with another color (maybe the really rust).

This really is a simple technique, it's a visual trickster! Stamp your images on the white cardstock, punch holes with various sizes of circle punches. Then stamp your images on colored cardstock and line them up behind the holes. On the pumpkin in the upper left hand corner, I stamped the pumpkin again on Only Orange cardstock and then lined it up so the part of the white image that was punched away was 'replaced' by the Only Orange. Make sense? Then put a dark color behind the whole thing so your colors pop!
