I love this picture of Patty, taken only a few weeks before
Keith was born back in 1979. The look on her face is one of
anticipation. It makes me wonder what she was thinking.
Was she nervous about labor and birth? Was she anxious
to meet him? Did she wonder who
he would look like? Who he would
take after in his mannerisms and the
way he talks? Were his clothes
washed and prepared for his arrival?
Was she uncomfortable or still
enjoying being pregnant?
When I asked her about this picture,
she remembered that her sister MaryAnn
had come out to visit her and took
this picture of her. She was about
38 weeks pregnant. She was due \
March 27, but Keith didnÂ’t arrive
until March 30. She went to the
hospital just before midnight on
March 29 and Keith entered the world
at 10:30 a.m. So her labor was just
about 12 hours long. She delivered
in New Albany, Indiana, the city she
grew up in. She had back labor
the entire time and remembers how much her back hurt the whole
labor. She didnÂ’t have an epidural.
In her words: “I remember looking at him and thinking he was
the most perfect thing IÂ’ haÂ’d ever seen. He had a little fuzz on
his head and he was just beautiful and had the most beautiful
complexion.”
