We have a delicious video that Kia chose for our challenge this week. We are painting blueberries. It can be found here-
This artist plans her painting and sketching before starting. Very informative on sketching and mixing the colors. She also shows shadowing. Question for you. How do you paint, from memory or looking at and item or picture? This week I chose to use a reference picture. Printed it from the computer and used it to sketch my blueberries. It also helps you mix the correct colors. Printed photo, mixed the colors and practiced sketching the blueberry shapes. After much erasing liked what was sketched. Watercolored them and finally did the highlights as she did with a gel pen. It took about three layers to achieve the dark blue on the fruit. Added some splatters too. My image is not the blueberries resting on a table, but rather hanging from a bush. Come and join us this week and paint some blueberries. TFL

Yummy! Your blueberries look delicious, perfectly ripe; ready to eat! You did a great job with the gel pen. I wasn't sure if mine was water soluble and instead of checking it out, I just used paint! LOL A lot of times I just go by the video but this week, I searched online for a picture of blueberries and did my best to match the light on the berries and the shadows beneath! Fun question!

funny true story, I went out side and looked at my bushes. ( they grow upright and the berries are at the top like tulips haha) so, I kept trying to figure out where the shadow for the leaves should be since I remembered it being such a harsh spotlight somewhere to get such a shadow on the sitting berries.
I love that you did here Linda, the colors are beautiful.

I love blueberries and I love what you did with them, Linda! Your paintings are always inspiring. Whenever I've drawn freehand, I look at pictures and draw what I see. For stamping, I check out what other people have done with the set, then decide on the colors, design, layout, etc. I would much rather have a photo in front of me than use my memory~

Love your colors and the blueberries hanging down on a tree branch. Love the splatters- cool lesson about the white gel pen- I did not know it was water soluble. I am very visual, so like to look at a picture while painting or coloring..... !
