I really had to think for a while on this challenge, Angie . . . in the end I took one of my "walks on the wild side". Although the sheer size of adult horses frightens me they are truly magnificent creatures to watch in motion.
I found this fantastic coloring page on line and printed it on watercolor paper - I did tweak it to print in Sketch mode so it wouldn't look so "coloring bookish". Grabbed my tray of cheap-o kids watercolors and started slinging random Browns, and dark blue without conscious thought (this seems to work best for me since I still don't have the concept really of how to PLACE shadows so I just follow my heart). I did use some of the white watercolor on the throat marking but used really watered down white acrylic paint for the facial markings since it was in full light. I left the original (not so) white throat since it was in shadow . . . I am SO thrilled with how this turned out that I actually signed and dated it ! !
In order to center my image, I decided to do some out of the box framing - fussy cutting part of the mane. I used the drop off from my painting to stamp the sentiment and fussy cut it, too, to avoid the square, in a square, in a square look. Framed my entire piece in Rust red and then in the "mane colored" DSP and attached the sentiment.

Linda, this is stunning! Your watercolor is so beautiful! I love your phrase "slinging paint", you know RIGHT where to sling it! I also like the way you trimmed the mane out of the box. Gorgeous! Thanks so much for playing in my challenge! *** And I am back after reading your comment in the challenge. I LOVE that watercolor is now your favorite thing to do. I think watercolor has a unique kind of magic because I have felt the same way this year!
