Right away when I saw the sketch a flap card came to mind. There are several different versions of flap cards - here are two tutorials you can check out:
I'm hard a work making Christmas cards, so I knew the theme, but what about paper? I recently got Stampin' Up! (SU) "Nobel Peacock" foil cardstock and also their "Brightly Gleaming" specialty designer series paper which were both begging to be opened and used.
Since I wanted by finished card to be 4-1/4" by 5-1/2", I cut a piece of A2 sized thick white cardstock in half the long way for my card base. There are various ways to do the two folds. I chose to score at 2" and 3-1/2". Note these scoring measurements will give you a card whose front flaps do not overlap... they meet. If you want yours to overlap, please refer to the scoring measurements in the two tutorials I referenced above.
The ornament is from SU's 2009 stamp set called "Delightful Decorations". I stamped it using Versamark ink onto the Raspberry Bushel foil cardstock, then sprinkled gold embossing powder and heat set it. Using the ornament's matching punch. It's matting is a SU Night of Navy scallop die-cut backed by a gold foil stitched circle die-cut. The ornament was attached using foam tape to give it more depth.
The beautiful starry background paper is from SU's "Brightly Gleaming" specialty paper pack. Both panels were cut about 1/8" smaller on the sides than the card base, and attached with glue.
The finished matted ornament element was attached to the TOP FLAP ONLY using glue. Then a foil star was die cut, and backed by three more thick white die-cut stars that were glued together. Before I glued the foil star on top, I used a gold metallic pen to color all the white star edges. The star was then attached to the bottom front panel using a piece of foam tape so that two of its points overlapped the ornament element as a card closure that the ornament element was tucked behind as a card closure (don't glue the star to the ornament element!).
The card was pretty easy to make, it just took time to figure out what papers and elements I wanted to fit the FMS sketch challenge. I am rating the difficulty as a "2" out of a possible "5". All the gold sparkles make this a card I'm sure one of my relatives will appreciate receiving this Christmas!
