This card was made for a Try Stampin' on Tuesday sketch challenge that also included the challenge to use "cozy patterns". Now I'm not much of a patterned paper crafter, so I took it as a challenge to to try and use pattern paper for every layer!
I started with the strip of candy canes from a very OLD paper in my stash by Provo Craft from 2003. I fussy cut the strip of candy canes from the 12" sheet, then cut a dark brown mat just 1/8" bigger than the pattern. Before gluing them together, I drew around the candy can cutout onto some white kids fun foam so it would be the right size not to show when I glued it behind the brown mat. Then I glued the candy canes to the mat.
The patterned paper I used for the background of the card are both from a Christmas paper stack called "Festivus" that I've had for quite a while. I wanted the colors to repeat those used with the candy cane strip, and not be too bright for the traditional look I was going for. I glued the green polka dot pattern to the Stampin' Up! (SU) Early Espresso 10"x 7" card base that I had folded in half.
The darker polka dot paper was from the same paper pad. I matted it with the same cardstock as the card base and glued it directly on top of the green piece.
Next, I applied glue to the back of the matted and foam-backed candy can piece and adhered it to the card front per the sketch challenge.
The final piece was the sentiment. I dug into my rubber stamps way back to 1992 and pulled out the most traditional Christmas sentiment I could find. I stamped this using SU Cherry Cobbler in onto the scrap of pattern paper left after I had cut out the candy canes. Using a circle die, I cut out the stamped sentiment, and with a craft sponge colored the edges of the circle using SU Crumb Cake and Peekaboo Peach to make the edges look similar to the candy cane piece. I then adhered the sentiment to the scalloped circle that I had die cut from SU Cherry Cobbler cardstock. Again, I wanted to raise the circle up, so using the same circle die as I had for the sentiment, I die cut a fun foam circle and glued it to the back of the scalloped piece, then glued the entire sentiment onto the front of the candy canes.
So, I double challenged myself... I made a very traditional Christmas card, AND I used pattern paper for every layer except the base and matting.
I am rating the difficulty of this card as a "2" out of a possible "5". The hardest part was fussy cutting out the candy cane strip, and as you can see, that wasn't very intricate.
