I attended the online course âBeyond Basic Backgrounds" by Lydia Evans as part of the Altenew Educator Certification Program. As the name reveals, the 6 lessons showed special ideas for backgrounds with tips and tricks.
For the project for this course I chose the "In-laid Die-Cutting"-technique to create the background. For me, assembling the individual die-cut elements is a bit like putting together a puzzle, and you shouldn't lose any pieces during "In-laid Die-Cutting".
In the course Lydia Evans colored white cardstock with alcohol markers and then die-cut the elements. Since I enjoy using alcohol inks, I wanted to use them for this project. With a brush I distributed blending solution on a silver "Always & Forever Glitter Cardstock" and then dripped yellow, orange, red and rusty alcohol inks on it. The glitter cardstock does not have to be silver colored; other colors also give nice effects. After drying, I die-cut four different roses with the Altenew "Rose Filament Dies".
From a square white cardstock I also die-cut the same four roses and carefully collected all the individual parts. I glued this white cardstock with the "rose holes" onto a slightly smaller white cardstock. Then I filled the "holes": First I glued the roses from the glitter cardstock, after that I glued all the white elements I had collected.
Note: Some adhesives dissolve the alcohol inks which can smear, so please be careful. I wanted to work with liquid glue, because then I could move the single parts back and forth a little bit. One could also work with a double-sided adhesive sheet between the two white cardstocks, but then no "correcting" of the single parts would be possible.
I die-cut the letters r-o-s-e-s with the Altenew "Bold Alphabet Dies" from the glitter cardstock and from a black cardstock and glued them offset one behind the other to get a shadow effect. I then glued the letters onto a vellum strip, which I affixed to the middle of the card. Now I added some wonderfully glittering "Say it in Crystals" in similar colors and glued everything to a craft paper card.
Unfortunately the sparkle of the roses and the word roses cannot be easily seen in the photos. You just have to try it yourself and see what you get. And of course you can use all colored papers for this technique, e.g. Gelliplate backgrounds or whatever colored paper scraps you have lying around.
Have fun experimenting
