I found out earlier this month that a friend of mine has terminal cancer. I decided to make her a card to cheer her up (at least, as much as possible). I've always considered her to be kind of "salty" (in a good way, though!), so I thought the "Stay Salty" stamp set--especially the "Ship happens" greeting--would be perfect!
I decided to make a round card, so it is like you are looking out of a ship's porthole at the scene. I die cut a frame from kraft cardstock, using 2 "Nesting Circles" dies, and die cut another piece of bristol paper with the smaller die. After marking my horizon line on the inner circle, I cut the panel along that line. I used the wave border dies to cut the waves out of the lower portion. I inked the sky area with Tumbled Glass, adding just a bit of Mermaid Lagoon at the top to deepen the color. I also used Mermaid Lagoon for the waves. After I inked the waves, I spritzed them with water from my Distress Sprayer, let that sit for a few seconds, & blotted it up with a dry cloth. Finally, I adhered the sky & waves to another circle I'd cut from scrap cardstock, just so they would be in one unit.
I stamped the boat with Soft Granite onto mixed media paper, and colored it with Inktense pencils. I used a damp paintbrush to pick up the color from the pencils and apply it to the paper. This gives me the most control over shading & the amount of color I apply. When it was dry, I die cut it with the coordinating die. I also die cut some clouds from mixed media paper. I stamped my greeting on one with Navy ink.
I used liquid glue to adhere my boat and clouds to the background, then trimmed off the overhanging portions of the clouds. For the frame, I stamped the woodgrain pattern with Walnut Stain Distress Oxide ink, and inked around the edges with the same to add a bit of depth. I used brads around the frame, to mimic nailheads.
To assemble my card, I die cut 2 more circles from white cardstock using the larger circle die. I scored one about 1/2" from the edge, and adhered the other to it, applying Scor Tape above the fold. I also cut a small sliver off the bottom of the back piece, parallel to the score line, so the card can stand up. I glued my frame in place, and adhered the center scene portion. I stamped the greeting, "Stay salty, my friend," on the inside, again with Navy ink. Hopefully this will provide my friend some comfort as she prepares for her journey to the next life.

I love this card. I love the ocean, the boat, the waves, your porthole design, all the love and tears you put into this creation. Your friend has a treasure in you. Please tell her aloha from the Big Island.

This is so beautiful, and heartwarming too. I am so sorry for both you and your friend, and pray that the sun shines on her daily, she experiences more good days than bad, and loves every bit of life she has left (which I pray is a lot!)

Oh, Andrea, I am so sorry about your friend, and this is an especially difficult one to make. She is blessed to have you as a friend, and it sounds like she will love this card with the sentiment. It's beautifully done and looks just like a porthole with the ocean and the ship outside! I can see why it was favorited this week -- it deserves it! Hugs! xoxo
