Global Design Project #069: http://www.global-design-project.com/ that specified three colors - Delightful Dijon, Silver, and a color of my choice (Cape Cod Blue).
Once again I challenged myself to come up with a masculine card (always in need of them, but never have enough on hand!). The MOJO sketch gave me a head start in terms of layout, and the GDP challenge gave me my colors. I had on hand a package of spur-of-the-moment buy "measuring tape" ribbon that was in a blue color similar to some Recollections paper I already had; so the ribbon decided for me that my third color would be blue.
What better comes to mind when you think guy cards than tools??? When I saw GDP designer, Paula Dobson's sample card (https://goo.gl/OdLFM8) it inspired me to use my 1996 Stampin' Up! Tool Time stamp set that included screw drivers and screws. To give the screwdrivers more of a "plastic" look I stamped them on Delightful Dijon with Versamark ink, then heat embossed with Clear Embossing Powder. I then stamped the screwdrivers again with Colorbox Silver ink to give me lines to cut along for the shanks. I taped the shanks to the heat embossed handles I had hand-cut using Tear & Tape.
The screwdrivers were mounted to a 2-1/2" square Whisper White panel, and the nails stamp was inked with the Silver, then the bottom half of each nail was wiped clean with a baby wipe to make them shorter like screws, rather than long nails. The sentiment color was a challenge since I didn't have a Stampin' Up! ink to match. I solved it by first inking the sentiment with SU Night of Navy, then stamping off once, and re-inking with Marina Mist.
Then white panel was then matted at the top half with the Cape Cod Blue, and the bottom with Delightful Dijon to give contrast over the two card panels and die cut gear. This matted element was later attached with Adhesive Foam Strips to the front of the card (being careful to line up the matting change line where the Delightful Dijon and silver front panels met)
The bottom panel was cut to fit from Recollections Frosted Silver cardstock, but it just looked too blah. So I gave it some added texture by running it through my Big Shot with a Darcie Steampunk Embossing Folder.
The sketch circle element just had to be a gear to carry over the theme of manly tools, so I used a large gear die from Sizzix Gearhead Thinlits Dies to create a silver element mounted on a circle of blue.
I absolutely LOVE the Measuring Tape Ribbon I found in a sale bin at Michaels!!! This was the perfect vertical element the sketch required. I attached it with Tear & Tape.
Finally, I couldn't resist adding three Phillips screw head brads to continue the tool theme and add some balance to the card. I cut the "tails" off the brads, and attached them with two Mini Glue Dots each.
Before I took the photo of the card, I raided my husbands toolbox and found a Phillips screwdriver with all three colors found in my card.... I just HAD to photograph it along side my creation!
I gave this card a difficulty of "4" just because it had so much thinking going into it. I ad libbed along the way as the card evolved... despite how easy I thought it would be since the two card challenges had provided me the layout and the colors! A lot of prep and exact cutting/fitting was required. But it was FUN!!!
