Okay, so here's my excuse: I couldn't find the post for the challenge until after 10 am (I did look a bunch of times, really!), by which time one person had uploaded their card, and there was another in the gallery. I saw the words "scrunched paper," in the descriptions of both and figured I knew what the challenge was going to be. By the time I saw the actual directions, my card was all but done. So that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
SO - what we have here is NOT an example of using scrunched paper to apply paint, but scrunching up paper and applying ink to it. That BG is paper that has been scrunched up and had Distress Ink applied to it, the way Tim Holtz used to do in those early days before he invented Wrinkle-Free Distress. Remember this technique? You can't even find a YouTube of him doing it anymore, and in one of the live chats during the Summer of Creative Chemistry he joked about how lots of people are confused as to why Wrinkle-Free Distress is even called that (wrinkle-free as opposed to what?), since they weren't into Distress back in the day, when Tim always scrunched up his tags, swiped the "hills" with ink and then sprayed them with water. But I was there. It was kind of the Woodstock days of Distress. Yeah, I definitely was there. (For Wrinkled Distress, not Woodstock. I was in eleventh grade when Woodstock happened, and my parents wouldn't let me cut school to go.)
So that's what you have here - a Wrinkled Distress BG using several colors of ink. Which I then ironed smooth. As I used to do. If you search the forums you'll find years-old threads where I whine about how degraded the paper gets doing this, and how I can't get it flat again. And you'll see people telling me to quit using cardstock and use watercolor paper and changing my life.
I wasn't sure if I should put this card in the gallery, given that I've done the challenge backwards. But, darn it, I thought I was doing MIX187. I believed it in my heart! And these days getting me up for making a card at all is an amazing thing, given my mojo crisis, so if nothing else I thought I'd post it to give thanks to Jeanne S.(and Polly, who posted that first card). This might not be exactly what you wanted, but you got me to give you something!

LOL, I looked a bunch of times too - and then it was too late for me to expect to finish a card today but I might start now. And yes, you should definitely have tagged it for the challenge ;-).
This would have been more of a challenge for me, I'm not very good at scrunching my background paper, but I love the technique Anne had for a TLC of scrunching wax paper, applying ink with it and embossing, so that's the way I'm planning to go.
Thank you for the history of Wrinkle Free - I did always wonder! I guess I just thought of it as a totally different technique to crumpling, inking and spraying... I love your colours here, to get back to our sheep (as the French say), the way the screen picks up on the blue in the bird, and that pale blue...

The tilt is back I see ) I love that bird. Your half lattice looks cool with your version of the scrunched paper technique. I enjoyed your write up on the Tim H wrinkle free distress vis a vie Woodstock...interesting. Was Hendrix playing in the background?? I can't believe you got out your iron for this card..I see it's not listed in your accessories...Rowenta? Anyway you came out with a lovely card and had some fun trying to guess the challenge. Glad you made a card today. Oh and if a challenge isn't listed you can always PM me for a hint (as a MIX hostess I have special powers....and I can see inside the staging area).

I loved your write-up and the walk down memory lane. Your card is fabulous and I think it works perfectly for the challenge. I saw the 2 sample maker cards, but I couldn't work out what the challenge was. I love your take on their cards.

I so enjoyed your write up for your card...and I love your card! That bird is so pretty, love the colors and your bg looks/sounds close enough to the technique.

Loved reading your write-up! I always wondered why Wrinkle Free Distress was called "wrinkle free"!! I really like the way your background turned out so I'm very glad you posted it. I might try doing it!
