Start by finding a nice M image and print it out.
Sandwich printout, watercolor paper, cork, and a cuttingboard.
Use a thumbtack (or an actual pricking tool, or an ice pick, or a needle, or... but it helps to have something handle-ish) to prick holes through the paper and the watercolor paper into the cork. Space your holes 1/4 to 1/2 inch apart to avoid over perforating and tearing.
I misted the watercolor paper heavily, then went over the shape of the letter with a mown lawn distress stain and a blue gel crayon, then misted again lightly. After it was dry I added some random highlights and dots in gold paint.
I embroidered the M with a back stitch with 3 strands of green embroidery floss, and used 2 strands to add the beads.
This was a 3 part series, and each piece ended up looking amazingly different for using the same M.
