Mertensia Virginica - Virginia Bluebell
The Garden In The Woods - Framingham, MA 4/22/06
Everyone sat down together to design our very first drawings in our brand new sketch books! We each created our own version of this flower, Mertensia Virginica, or Virginia Bluebell. What a wonderful family activity to do on Earth Day!
I printed the large main photograph on plain vellum (it's really black & white, not green, but the colors under it flavor it with green.. I don't know why, but it was important to me to print it on vellum? also the brown and white background pattern is a 12x12 translucent print!). There are scans and shrunken repeats of both of my daughters' drawings and mine. The flower that we were all sketching is in the photograph that the journalling is embedded into.

Thank you We've been doing a lot of treks out to Audubon Sanctuaries, geocaching in every outdoor environment, picnics all over, and soon we'll be off to the zoos on a regular basis... it seemed only natural to get them each a sketch book! After I did, I saw that there was a Wildflower Try-It by a regional Girl Scout Council and wouldn't you know that sketching a wildflower was part of the requirement! Although, we easily earned the full try-t with more of the optional requirements than were called for!
Thank you all! I just love how the kids all took to the concept! Can't wait for more clear days when school is out so that we can really go sketching! On this page, I knew that I wanted to fit sooo much on the page... the sketches, the original plant, some journalling about the plant and the sketches, a photo of us making the sketches, the map of the gardens or text about it.... to fit it all in, i layered! Text embedded in the color photo, see-thru black and white (you can read the whole map through it in real life!), scanned and shrunken sketches, etc and very simple paper layout with those great patterns from Club Scrap!
