I die cut my little deer out of that lightweight chipboard you get in SU DSP. Then I glued it to a piece of watercolor paper - I wanted a little more body than cardstock so it didn't warp.
Then I used gel medium to coat that whole panel, and gently added "thinfoil" - that's what I call the tinfoil we have. It's actually those foodservice pre-cut sheets of foil from Costco. A box lasts us more than a year and it's about 1/10th the price of rolls of foil. There's my frugalista tip for you.
But it's very thin, so I have to be careful crafting with it.
After I glued it down, I used my SU scraper and my bone folder to really mold it around the deer.
Next, I painted the whole thing with Gesso - twice, I think - to give the paint something to stick to. Then I used undiluted Pthalo blue to paint the whole panel, making it darker near the deer. I finished it with little white stars with my acrylic marker.
TFL!

Wow! Love your mixed media creation. The "thinfoil" is super. Pretty addition of stars, too.

I love your deer, first of all, it is so elegant looking like a set of deer decorations I have for an elegant holiday table setting that I have. I love the blue you used and the way it looks light blue in places because of the white gesso underneath. Beautiful!!

Beautiful!! I should have looked in the gallery for some inspiration BEFORE making something myself.
a) This reminds me so much of the illustrations in a Scandinavian story book I used to have.
b) I am definitely going to try the idea of gesso to give the paint something to stick to, I find it very hard not to wipe it all off when I'm only trying to wipe some off.
c) I just love those little white stars.
d) from all my years typing in product descriptions for Winsor & Newton stuff, I'm sure phthalo has an extra h, even when you drop the _cynaine ;-). Gee, it's a day for chemical names. We had three new ones thrown at us today in work and I should have written them down.

I agree with everything that Sabrina said (a-c anyway!!) What a wonderful combination of die cut and color. While it may be a word overused here this is just stunning. I'd rather have you share your art and expertise with us over choosing prize winners any day ;) Thanks for being so non-frugalista with them.

Love this, Lydia! I used a heavy duty foil and I still had probs. Until I used my embossing mat and ran it thru the sizzix instead of trying to do the stylus thing. Love your version w/ the blue paint.
