I am so excited about the new challenge forum for Mixed Media! I love learning new techniques - even when I kick and scream about some that just don't work for me. :) The best part of this challenge was that I found a bottle of Gesso that a friend gave me over two years ago - and it had not dried up!
The Mix1 challenge was to use a matte media and a shiny media. So I used Gesso for matte and embossing powder for shiny. I don't think Gesso is going to be one of my favorite mediums. It did what it was supposed to, I just don't like the results. The bg paper is the same paper that I applied the Gesso to.
The hard part for me was coloring my flower. I did this purple one second and decided to try water coloring using re-inkers. I always have trouble with any technique that uses a liquid medium, and I have never been able to make friends with a paint brush. LOL! This time I tried using green ep, hoping the leaf and bud would look better. They do, but then I didn't get enough Versamark and ep on the flower itself. The water coloring looked so bad that I added some color with a dark purple Copic marker. I added a yellow gem to the center for a little more shine and a matching butterfly to give a more finished look to the card.
As much as I'm whining about these two cards, they look nice from a distance, and I know that whoever receives them will think they are pretty. I look forward to the next Mixed Media challenge.

Val, I think your two mixed media cards are great! But I understand your frustration when things don't turn out the way you want/expect them to. Funny enough, some of these projects get the nicest comments, so maybe we are to hard on ourselves (ya think?)

Great job on the mixed media Val! Definitely have to get some gesso after I read about it. Kudos to you for trying it and I may have those same issues! Your card is so pretty and love the glitter touches!
