I got the technique for faux mother of pearl from our monthly Stampin' Up! magazine here in Australia. I put a few drops of Shimmer Paint (Frost White) on an acrylic block, then scrunched up some plastic wrap and daubed it all over a sheet of glossy white card stock. When it was dry (I helped it with a heat gun), I sponged dye ink over it, then wiped it off with a paper towel. The ink won't stay where the shimmer paint is. To stamp an image, I used Stazon Jet Black.
I have also used Platinum Shimmer Paint which gives a silvery effect (see my blog).
