The other day my son called and asked if I could make a special birthday card for his friend's son who was turn 1. I said sure.
A few minutes later, my son calls back and asked if I could make the card with a green and gold theme.
I said, "Seriously!?! The boy is just turning a year old and already he's a Packer fan?!!?"
My son answered, "We're going to train him up right!"
I didn't have to work that day, but I ran in to the store to pick up a few things. I work at Door County Rubber Stamps and Scrapbooking, and we carry some perfect paper for this project, and I needed a couple of our little boy stamps too.
When I got back home, I pulled out the Cricut and the Graphically Speaking cartridge. I started flipping thru the book for images to cut.
This pic is of the front cover. Birthday Boy, Score and the collage of "ones" are all from the Graphic cartridge. The boy and the football are stamped, colored and cut out, then attached. You can't tell in the photo, but the football is on a pop dot.
I apologize for the poor quality of some of the pictures of this birthday book. I was in a hurry and had less than ideal light conditions. The flash was too much, but without it, the pictures were too dim. I had focussing issues as well, due to the lighting.
Oh...to make the book, I first cut the front and back covers from thinner chipboard, and the single page inside (plain white c.s.) to 5x7. Then I scored each cover and the page at 1/2 in., in from the left edge. That half inch would be my binding area, and the scoring allows the pages to turn nicely. Also, I needed this to fit into a 5x7 envelope when it was finished.
I did all the stamping, cutting and assembly before binding the book. Much simpler to work on each page that way.
When I had each page built, I put them together and held them together with a couple clothes pins. Then using my cropadile, I punched 4 holes with the 1/8 in. punch.
I removed the clothes pins and separated the pages again, then used redline tape between each hole on each page. Then I carefully lined up the edges and holes and stuck the pages together.
That done, I set gold eyelets in each hole. My son didn't want ribbon on the card, and I didn't want to use brads because of the sharp points on the backside of the book. Eyelets bind but have no sharp edges to poke or nick little fingers.
This was very fun to make. I wish I'd had more time so I could've gotten a little fancier though.
What do you think?
