For smackin' acetate you need a piece of acetate which is sold as "window sheets" in the SU catalog and is the same as overhead projector sheets which you can buy at Walmart or an office supply store. They come in varying weights/thicknesses at the office supply, but they all work pretty much the same. My sister and I also got a huge sheet at Ben Franklin's in the art supply area and cut it down between us. This is the same stuff you use for shaker box cards.
So, you have your piece of acetate, slightly larger than the glossy c/s you are working with - say 1/4 sheet. Take several markers and "color" the acetate in large swirls/squiggles/etc. depending on where you want color and what general shapes, keeping in mind that it will totally change at the end. LOL! You don't want to use too many colors or run them together on the acetate cause you'll end up with a muddy effect. After coloring your acetate, spray lightly with a very fine mist of water, then turn it over and "smack" it on the glossy paper. I don't smack so much as lay it on the paper, then kind of flatten it out to smoosh the color around. Pick up the acetate and see your creation! Simple as that.
Wipe down your acetate with a paper towel and use over and over again. The c/s only takes a very short time to dry out and be ready to use. If you happen to get too much water on the acetate and you have puddles when you pick it up, you can gently dab the c/s with a paper towel. Basically just play around and see what you come up with. It's like opening a present every time - never know what you're going to get!
