Join in the Ways to Use It Challenge - WT28

If you are stuck in a rut and find yourself using only the same supplies over and over, this challenge is for you. If you are trying to find more ways to use your stuff and make them more versatile, this challenge is for you. If you are a demo and are looking for more ideas to sell a product, this challenge is for you. If you are looking for ways to stretch your creativity, this challenge is for you. There are no deadlines, prizes, pressure, contests, no limits on how many you can make....just play along and share your ideas. Hope that you can join in this week!

This week's challenge is to use something I just had to have and ordered every color known to man. I do love it but find I am always forgetting to pull it out and use it. This week's challenge (and I hope you will accept it:) ) is to use.......... PEARL EX. Pearl Ex is awesome for soooo many techniques and for adding a beautiful shimmer to your work. I think that it is perfect for this time of year with the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays around the corner. I also need a little shine today as it is a very cold wet Autumn day here. :) Later this morning I will be posting some Pearl Ex technique sheets to this thread for those of you who are interested or just plain stuck. Be sure to check back. Also feel free to post any tips or questions you have about Pearl Ex to this thread as we can all benefit.

Please remember to put WT28 in your keywords section and post a link back here so that we can all see your work. I do realize that Pearl Ex looks so much more incredible in person so we will all use our imaginations.

Have an awesome day,

Don't have Pearl EX but will enjoy everything I'll learn from this challenge. Guess I'd better order some on my next order for the future. TIA for all of the info.

Julia, You are too funny, I did the exact same thing. Had to have the Pearl Ex and Twinkling H2O's in many colors and have yet to use them :) Will try this today!

That's why I came up with this challenge....especially for you, and me too of course!:)

Are Pearl EX and H2O's the same kind of thing? I do have a variety of H2O's.

If you want to use the Twinkling H2O's if you don't have pearl ex, go right ahead. I think that they are a similar product made with mica powders just like pearl ex. The difference is they have a binder in them and are dried solid to be used as watercolors....just add water. Pearl ex can be used as a mica paint as well as long as you add some gum arabic for a binder otherwise it will just wash off. Pearl ex is a little more versatile as you can add it to the project different ways....brush it on etc.

good challenge Julia,
I have pearl-ex, have had the lid off once, decided I didn't like it & it's never seen the light of day since. I will try again!

Julia S 09-29-2005 10:49 AM

Here is my first try at it today....

Your Mom!!!

Julia,

I just came in to check out the challenge and noticed your blurb about your Mom. That is wonderful news. I am so happy for you and your family. I hope she continues to do well.

Julia S 09-29-2005 12:10 PM

Thanks Kittie. We are very pleased with the results. She still has to see the oncologist to determine whether she will need treatment because of the lymph node involvement, but we are very encouraged with this news.:) Will keep you updated. Thanks for caring....

Julia S 09-29-2005 12:12 PM

Here is another one I tried today but I hate the bg. Thought I'd post it anyways.:)

This technique for the background came with my pearl ex packet...unfortunately I've only used them on a card this once and I've had them for months!

I'm also using pearl ex for coloring my christmas candles:

ways to use it

I am brand new to SCS and Stampin'up and to the Fan Club. This site is the best!! This is a challenge I just might join! I bought a lot of Pearl ex and have had it for a week. I tried to use it but didn't know how. So I will be double challenged to find out how and also use it!!

Here is a file I have on Pearl Ex that you might want to take a look at!

Have fun!

Here's mine. Didn't get the full effect in the scan. It's really shimmery in person!

Pearl-Ex! I love the shimmer it gives without the glitziness of glitter! There are some upcoming TLCs with pearl-ex too!

I'm off for the weekend with some girlfriends (lucky me! :D), but I'll play next week. Great challenge Julia. And I am sooo happy to hear the good news about your mom. :)

raduse 09-29-2005 03:39 PM

Oh maaaannnnn.... Now I gotta go find it and dust the stuff off. Now where did I put it???? Probably with the twinkling H2O's I had to have too. Ok, I accept this challenge, but I refuse to dust the rest of the house, ok? :) I'll get to this after paying the bills tonight.

auntie65 09-29-2005 07:17 PM

Oh no! No Pearl EX....humm..wonder if any of my family members have it? I'll check. I do have h2o's though. By the way, so glad that your mother is looking good with her results. Will keep both of you in my prayers.

Read the tip sheet. I got the Lumiere. I thought I could just mix it with the PE a little bit, but it says to mix with water, and then PE - at least for applying to paper. I don't really want to have to mix and store more stuff!!

Is there a problem with using Lumiere with just PE and painting with it, and if I can do it, does anyone know what proportion? The tip sheet had a ratio listed but said it was for "other things."

Thanks in advance!

Julia S 09-30-2005 02:48 AM

I have no idea about the Lumiere...I've been thinking of trying it but have never gotten around to it.:) How about posting the question in the general stamping forum if no one knows the answer here this morning.

Pearl Ex with Acetate Tissue Technique

2 Attachment(s)
Ok I made a couple of cards last night trying the Acetate Tissue technique with Pearl Ex. The Acetate Tissue technique was fun and another great way to use Pearl Ex. In the one sample I used re-inkers with Pearl Ex mixed in but in the other example I used Pearl Ex mixed with Mod Podge (no reinkers). I like the way both techniques worked. Let me know what you think.

I've done this before. I bought some small plastic paint cups from wal-mart. Think the kind that are about dime sized with the cap hooked onto them and they are hooked together in a row. Like some you'd get in a kid's craft kit.

Anyway, I put some lumiere in the cup (just a small amount) and added pearl ex until I got the color that I was wanting - it doesn't take too much. (I didn't add any water) Then since the cups close you can keep it if you make too much. *Forgot to add that it wasn't too thick to paint with and that I just mixed it with a toothpick.

To use mine I stamped an image on acetate and then painted the lumiere/pearl ex mixture on the back. However, I'm sure there are other ways you can use it also :)

So the way I did it is very similiar to the pearl ex/future floor wax painting but it uses another SU product instead of something else.

I don't remember if my card is in my gallery or not. I'm having trouble getting into the gallery right now. I'll check on it later and if the card is in my gallery I'll post a link.

*Got into my gallery and found two cards where I did this:

Here's one I did with PE. I rubbed a bunch onto the cardstock pieces with a stipple brush. Then, stamped the images using VersaMark. It pulled the PE back off the cardstock. On the black background piece and the central Kraft piece, I rubbed some additional PE back on so that it would stick to the VersaMarked image and really make them pop. Then, I sprayed the whole thing with cheap hairspray to seal the PE in place.

I used my Pearl Ex to make it and it was a lot of fun. The background was made by mixing white glue (Elmers) with some PE and dabbing on the black CS with a cotton ball. The leaf was stamped with Versamark and PE was brushed on. Never sealed with anything and have never had any problems with it.

Just didn't want to post it to the gallery tonight to am attaching here.

AWWWHHHHH! It is so much prettier in person than the scan. Really shimmery and the gold paper is nice and glitzy. Darn scans!!

I hope you like this card. I saw one of this type of design, and I just liked it so much, that I had to try it.
