Default DEC12VSNMINI5 ~ Friday, Nov. 9th ~ 9:00pm EST ~ Cozy Candlelight

Title: Cozy Candlelight
Hostess: Sabrina (Cook22)

Keyword: DEC12VSNMINI5
Day/Date: Friday, Nov. 9, 2012
Time: 9:00pm EST

matchboxsmile.gif

I know it's probably not much fun if you've been stuck with candlelight because of a power outage from a major weather event like Sandy! Not much coziness or romance there. The first Christmas after my parents moved down to the country, we arrived just after midday on Christmas Eve and just after a storm had brought the power lines down. What a disaster - no ground coffee, no coffee grinder!! Thankfully we had heat and cooking facilities, and we spent a very pleasant Christmas Eve evening playing Travel Scrabble with a candle each for lighting.
I do believe that could be the last time I've had to light a candle for a power outage, but earlier this year I discovered Soot Stamping. So my challenge to you is to get those candles out and create a card using soot stamping.

Top time-saving tip from me ~ you do need to hold the candle fairly close to the card so that the flame just touches it, but if you hold it TOO close, you can put the candle out AND you get scratches in the soot from the candle wick. Just saving you from learning that the hard way ;).

Please note: if you need extra time for your fixative to dry, you don't have to count that in the 45 minutes. I used 2 coats of Winsor & Newton Artist's Fixative on mine, and within 15 minutes it was dry enough to put through the Big Shot - but if you need extra time with whatever sealer you use, that's ok, you can stop the clock till it's dry.

I'm sorry I can't be around to chat when this goes live but Lee is going to be my super-deputy till my time zone lets me check in .

My thanks to Lynn for providing me with an extra sample - her first go at this, so be inspired!!

Whoa Sabrina! Those are very cool samples! I'm off to try this. I have only done this technique once, so I will keep my fingers crossed that it works out!

I must have purchased the wrong fixative. Looks like it's going to take all night for the image to dry! Wasted $$... I'll have to upload this one late. Oh, well. What happens if I put a piece of clear laminate film over an image? I may have to try that~

Wow, I've never tried this technique. I'm just starting on the challenges here in Cali. I am wondering if we can use hair spray over the panel? I guess I better go and read the technique first. Love all the samples thus far.

Kathy, I'm thinking hairspray would probably work! I don't use it ;), so I wasn't able to test drive it. But the spray fixative I use is the same one I use for chalks, and I know lots of people use hairspray for that. When I checked out different tutorials on the net all sorts of different fixatives were used.

LOL. I had that when I tried this for one of the DTGD challenges. So this time I remembered to read the can and it said spray from 12-15" away.
I really like the spatter look on your mushrooms!

Sabrina, so far I've gone through 2 pieces of cs, both started on fire. I guess I am still learning. The second wasn't too bad so I tried stamping and it didn't even show up. So back to the drawing board but haven't given up yet.

Yikes! I'm sorry you're having such trouble. I don't know what to suggest - I didn't have any problems with fire till I tried out photo paper to see if that would work., for sure it didn't.

Default DEC12VSNMINI5 Sooty Scene

Ok, Sabrina. You had me challenged with this one. I need just a bit more practice with this. I would say it would probably be a better idea to cut a small panel rather than try to soot up a big panel like I did. Also I'd recommend spraying the panel before you do anything else with it. Less fingerprints to cover that way! Thanks.

I think it looks like a really dreamy winter scene!
I was afraid of getting burned edges if I started with a piece cut to size, plus having to hold it, you need a clean margin. I think I used about a half sheet of card, and sooted up about 2/3 of it - so then I could choose the best area to stamp in, LOL. Thank you for persevering, I appreciate it.
