Default TLC309 ~ Resistance is Faux Tile! ~ 01/24/11

Hello Stampers!!

Ok, that title is really showing my inner geek. For those of you who are wondering what the heck I’m talking about, the line “Resistance is futile!” originated from the Star Trek: Next Generation series. When I was trying to come up with a name for today’s technique challenge, one of my Star Trek geek kids (and they’re ALL Trekkies) came up with that.

~ Faux Tile ~

Now, we’ve done similar techniques before, but just recently Michele Kovack posted a tutorial here in the resources section that is uber cool! You can find her tutorial with a video HERE. I’ll give you a couple of hints that I found made this technique not only fun, but easy to do!

Michele’s tutorial shows her using Ranger Glossy Glaze on her tiles. I started thinking that not everyone would have Glossy Glaze, so I did a few tests with other mediums to see what else would give same or similar effects. I have attached a photo at the bottom as a visual, but here it is in a nutshell:

A) UTEE – similar effect, not quite as shiny, but no wait time on the drying.
B) CLEAR EMBOSS (2x) – more of a matt finish, but no wait time on drying.
C) GLOSSY GLAZE – excellent coverage and shine. 2 hours minimum on drying.
D) ALEENE’S CLEAR GEL – result is a clear “bubble”, which is cool, but at least 2 hours dry time.

*** Oh, and when you put either Glaze or Gel on your pieces, it's best to lay them on either wax paper or acetate so that you don't have to pry them up off your desk! heehee.... ask me how I know ***

I also got to thinking about the tiles themselves. Tiles are used to decorate in a variety of ways, so you might want to think outside the box and make a pattern instead of the traditional square.

Here is my sample:

~ Birthdays are Faux Tile~

When uploading, please remember to use keyword TLC309 (no spaces), and also use the Faux Tile gallery in the drop down menu.

You can find the entire TLC309 gallery HERE.

You have to try this….resistance is futile!!!

Oh, and GO STEELERS!!!!

Yes, but you won't get the high gloss that you do with the glaze or a gel. If you click on the picture attached in the original post, I show you the different options and the results you might achieve .

LOL, your title is wonderful. I tried this out when the tutorial came out in the Inkling, but I want to have another go with EP or UTEE, so if I can get the housework out of the way quickly, this will be the perfect motivation. I was sure I was going to step on my drying Glossy Accents last time - no room on the table .

Oh, I hope I can get a chance to play. Back in 2005 or 2006, there was a challenge here on SCS for the Faux Tile...but then it was called Mosaic - using the UTEE. I have some glaze and UTEE, so I may try both again. (Not on the same card. Although, that may be a whole 'nother project. ) I haven't done one of these in, well, years!

LOL. Yeah, with four sons in their late teens and 20s, there is either Star Trek, Star Wars or Stargate playing on a TV or computer in our house at all times. When I get to watch a chick flick, it's like a holiday!

Echoing Tiles

It was a fun challenge, a little sticky and messy because I used Crystal Lacquer.
I will try another with UTEE. Thanks for the great technique.
