Default TLC22 -- come play today!

I hope you didn't put away your stylus, because this week's challenge is.... Dry Embossing Using Classy Brass Templates. This challenge is by request from a fellow SCS'er looking for a few good WOWs using her brass templates.

If you don't have any brass templates, you can use any plastic stencil with the same results.

Here is how to do it:
You will need a way to have light shine through the stencil and the card stock so you can see where to emboss. The easiest way is to you an actual light box. This is just a small box with a light bulb in it....you can find them at a craft store or from your friendly SU! demo. If you don't want to invest in one, you can use a glass 9x13 pan with a strand of Christmas lights wadded up underneath. Or, the cheapest method is to simply use your nearest window!

Ok, so tape down the stencil on your light source so that it doesn't move around. Tape JUST THE TOP of a piece of LIGHT colored cardstock over the stencil. Dark cardstock will not work...the light will not penetrate the paper.
Use your stylus to trace the design. When you have it all traced, flip ihe cardstock up and make sure you didn't miss anything. If its ok, remove the cardstock and add to your card. If you missed a spot, just flip it back down over the stencil and go over the part you missed. (this is why I told you to just tape down the top only....you can check your progress without having to line up the cardstock with the stencil!)

Try it with VELLUM....this is really a wow. Just don't press very hard with the stylus or you will rip the vellum. (don't ask how I know this)

Here's mine:
http://gallery.splitcoaststampers.co...p?photo=137044

Please put TLC22 in the keyword section when you upload, and then post a link to your card here in this thread.
If you need help uploading or posting a link to this thread, check out this link:
http://forums.splitcoaststampers.co...ead.php?t=39488
If you are new to the challenges, please feel free to do this one or ANY of the challenges at any time. There is no time limit. They are not races to see who can do one first, nor are they contests of any sort. All the challenges are simply to provide inspiration and to get us STAMPIN' !!

If you have suggestions for future TLC's, please PM me!

Have fun!

This is one that I "think" I might actually be able to do.

Thanks for the challenge.

Just a tip in doing this technique. In place of using actual tape, use a post it or the small post it book markers. It works great and no chance of the tape ruining your card. I store the book markers right on the light box and replace when the sticky wears out.
Now I must create!!!

Thanks!

another tip, you may want to rub over your card stock with wax paper to help your stylus to glide easier.

Scotch makes temporary tape which is great for a lot of projects (like masking). It's perfect for taping the brass stencils down without ruining your cardstock.

I love dry embossing, but haven't done it forever! I will have to make time this week to do at least one. Thanks Beth!

A tip that I learned from a class at my LSS is instead of using wax paper to make the stylus slide keep a white tealight candle by your light box. I use the candle instead of wax paper now to rub over the cardstock. It's always right there by my lightbox so everything is handy.

Has anyone tried the Empressor Stylus (page 227, Item J)? My friend wants to order it, and I want to be able to advise her whether it's worth the extra money.

More tape ideas. Leslie taught me to use double stick tape and slap onto your jeans a couple of times and then use to hold temporarily. Use also for taping your stamped image down when using the Stampamajig. Can't wait to try your new challenge. Nancy

Default dry embossed happy holidays

Well, here is my challenge this week. It's really a terrible scan. The white is embossed with the Happy Holidays stencil that is also the red happy holidays of the foreground. The poinsettas are also a stencil..after stenciling the phrase and pic, I just used a sponge with the different inks (with the stencil in place) to color my raised image. It looks much better in person...but here it is.

Still pending.

I don't have any of the Brass templates, so I used my Fiskars Shapeboss. I also used the wax paper for the first time, boy oh boy that makes a difference. My DH wonders what I do in my craft room with plastic wrap, bleach and now wax paper. LOL

Okay. I had to fudge this a bit because I don't have the SU! dry embossing tools yet, so I used a Fiskars set I got a couple Christmases ago. Still...I think it turned out okay.

I got my first card done and have a second one planned. Beth you really are making me use items that were lying dormant to long! Thank you so much!
I have to say what a great tip from Jami, I didn't know about that tape and must look for it. Also from Nancy except I'm stingy with my double sided. Peggy I do the wax paper but what a great tip for beginners and Lisa I’m trying the candle next.
Make sure you read the description for the paper sizes of this card for a new idea.

Newbie here. Just joined today. Just uploaded my first card EVER. Have been "lurking" for awhile and decided to try this week's challenge. My image is awaiting approval. If/when that happens, I'll try to post a link here. If I don't figure it out, please visit the "blueheron" gallery.

Let me know what I could do to enhance the card.

Thanks!

Thanks for the challenge. I just bought this template and hadn't unwrapped it yet. I also got to break into my Certainly Celery! Ooh, I love it!

Default You Did It!

Blue Heron, You did it! Great card and your posting to the forum worked too. Beth and all the other girls have awesome challenges. It is amazing how much you learn in such a short time. I lurked for 3 months before I finally got the nerve to post. It is still a thrill to have anyone look at let alone comment on any of my gallery cards. We are so lucky to have SCS.
Keep on posting, Nancy

Okay folks, it's all your fault. You've created a monster with your encouragement. I just uploaded another dry emboss card. I don't have a light box--just use my bedroom window. Limits my embossing to light card stock, though. I wanted to use one of my other colors (from the DTP background) for the torn part with the embossed butterfly, but can't see through the colored cardstock to emboss. Also limited to daytime stamping for it since I need the sun through my window as my light source. LOL.

The image might still be pending approval.

Before I became an SU demonstrator, all I did was dry embossing. I wouldn't want to tell you (or my hubby!) how many brass stencils I own!! I don't use them much anymore since I discovered stamps .... need to though!

Here are two cards I have done.

Here is my card for the technique challenge. My scanner broke last night and I was so upset that it may be a while before I got to upload my things and to participate in the challenges. But....... my DH went and got a new one today. Yeah!!!!!!http://gallery.splitcoaststampers.co...cat=500&page=1
