Default Yet ANOTHER Cardstock Question!

Until recently, I had always used SU! cardstock for my cards from start to finish, including base and layering. Then I made my hubby a b-day card last November using 140 lb cold-pressed watercolor paper (non SU!) as my card base. I was so impressed by how much sturdier the card was (not to mention the subtle texturing that added such nice dimension), I decided to make my single-layer 2007 Christmas cards with it.

The cards were a great success! I even got comments from family members who, in the past, haven't even acknowledged that the card I sent them was homemade! Hubby was also impressed. After looking one over very carefully, he said something like, "people won't even be able to tell that these are homemade." He meant this as the greatest of compliments, of course, but knows not what he says! LOL

Reminds me of a time when I was a young girl just learning to cook. I was playing waitress--taking orders and cooking burgers for my parents. After taking a bite of his burger, my dad said, "This tastes as good as McDonalds, and he and my mom both began laughing. I, of course, couldn't understand what was so funny as I could think of no higher compliment at that time than being told my food tasted as good as McDonalds! LOL I guess it's all about perspective. But I digress . . .

I've often toyed with the idea of using white/cream cs for all my card bases and just making card fronts for layering onto them--as many other SplitCoasters are doing. I'm thinking wc paper is just the ticket for my bases. The downside is that it's kinda pricey. Can't remember exactly what I paid, but I got it at Jo-Ann's. It came in a 9 x 12 tablet that contained only 12 sheets.

I guess what I'm wondering is, does anyone know of a source where I can get regular textured cardstock in 140 lb weight that is comparable to watercolor paper but not so expensive? (Talk about having your cake and eating it, too! LOL) Perhaps something that even comes in colors in case I want to make a base that isn't white?

Thanks a bunch, and Happy New Year fellow SplitCoasters!!

I went surfing and found the Paper Mill Store sells 140# watercolor paper in bulk. Five pads for $86. Here.
Jerry's Artarama is another spot to check. Here

Or you might search for Index Paper. It is usually a heavier weight. 110# to 120#

Try checking out www.paperzone.com
Also, PaperTreyInk's cardstock is excellent as bases for cards, although they do not have textured and they do not have it in vanilla. This is what I've started using when I make a card on a white base because SU whisper white is so thin.

I LOVE PaperTreyInk's white CS for cardbases, and the price is very reasonable! Just wish they had ivory as well.

I love using the white Image Plus cardstock by Georgia Pacific that they sell at Sam's. It's not quite as heavy, but at 110 lbs. it is pretty sturdy.

I get a pack of 250 sheets for a very reasonable price.

Hobby Lobby carries watercolor paper and they have it 50% off on occasion. I'm not sure what weight they have .........but, you may want to check this out.

Thanks to those who've taken the time to respond! I will check out your links and suggestions.

I did find this website: http://www.usartquest.com/cgi-bin/Sh...ction&key=PPR9. It's pricey at .49 per sheet, but I think still less than what I paid for the wc paper. It's not textured, but I will check it out anyway.

LOL! Umm ... yeah ... my "gallery" consists of the one card I've had enough courage to upload (my hubby's b-day card). My Christmas card was a CASE of this adorable little card, Take a Bough OLC by LateBlossom at Splitcoaststampers, so didn't see the need to upload something so similar.

I made a couple of changes in that I used watercolor paper, stamped / embossed both outside and inside sentiments in silver, and varied my ornaments a bit.

I love using the WC paper as the card base. I buy the cheapest pads Michael's has. Regular price is $1.99 for a pad of 10 sheets. My stamp store carries what she calls "felt" paper that is very similar. The Michael's paper is cheaper and a little heavier. I just have to cut it down since it's a little bigger than 8-1/2 x 11.

Since you are already using SU! CS and colors, why not turn to SU! Textured CS - it comes in all of the SU! colors and neutrals, too! Then you have your sturdy base, texture and every color you could want!
