A couple of months ago, I bought 3 different Wink Of Stella Brush glitter pens. I was so excited that the first day I open on up and nothing happen. So I pressed a little harder and still nothing happen. I open 1 more and it didn't work either. So I threw them in a drawer and forgot about them.
Yesterday I was looking at you-tube for a card I wanted to make. The next video was how to use the Wink of Stella glitter brush/pen. The lady in the video talked about how tricky it was to use. You unscrew the brush, take out the black ring, put the thing back together, squeeze the sides where it says push (you can barley see it) and then wait till the glitter gets to the end and use the pin.
I grabbed the other pen in the package and no where on the package did it tell how to use or prepare the pen the first time.. I know I am not the smartest person in the world, but who would have known or even guessed to unscrew the pen, take the ring out etc....
I just think that they could package their product better, so that someone who never used their markers would know how they work. And I love the pen so much that I will be buying several more in different colors.
I'm always amazed when a manufacturer assumes that you will know how to use a product with no guidance whatsoever. Half the time you can't even figure out how to open the PACKAGE, let alone the product! Thanks for the info, just in case I decide to try these out...

Me, too! Must have been caused by that Corona drinking water!
A friend gave me a starter package of Twinkling H2Os. Nowhere on the package did it say that I needed to add water. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to use my Gelatos. Thank goodness for the Internet!
I'm curious about this Wink of Stella product, and another one called the Kirarina Wink markers. What exactly are they? Are they glittery, like a Stickles in pen form? Or are they more like a shimmery ink, like the metallic Sharpie pens? Are they fast drying? Slow drying? Are the colorized versions transparent or opaque?
The Wink of Stella gives a slight simmer to your image or paper. It is not thick like Stickles. I used in on my paper to make it simmer and let it dry while I colored the image. It looked really good. I will be buying more now that I know how to make the thing work!
Well, I could've sworn they said something on the back of the package about taking off that black plastic ring, because I wouldn't have been smart enough to figure that out on my own, either :-)
I just love Wink of Stella! That subtle shimmer is so good on so many projects where you want a bit of bling but not a glop of glitter. The texture is like thinned glycerin with super microfine glitter added to it. The Wink of Luna pens are more like watered-down Perfect Pearls. And the shimmer doesn't flake off, either!

Fortunately I saw this demo'd by Jennifer McQuire who explained how to correctly open this and how to set it up prior to buying mine. I Followed her directions and works exactly as she said. Perhaps this should be put on the packaging as it certainly is not obvious that the black ring has to be removed.
The good thing about it too is that once you arent getting anymore out just add some water and give it a good shake, you will get a bit more life out of it. Not as intense but still useable. I love it, love 'winking' everything. Looks fantastic on painted, coloured or copiced.
I have a Gelli pen called Stardust that gives a shimmer to the card.
There are also YouTube videos on making your own Wink pens - they are a bit pricey. I have a ton of Pearl Ex that I never used and it has been really handy for making mists, sprays and Wink of Stella type of applications.
What???? Are there different Wink of Stellas? I never have done anything to mine and it works fine????
Hmm, I don't remember doing anything with mine either. It was a gift though, perhaps it was "pre-loved"? :lol: I'm not complaining though, free is free!
I think that there are Wink of Stella markers, which wouldn't have the ring; and then there are the brush markers, which are very much like a waterbrush filled with the shimmery goodness. I'm not sure how the shimmer compares; I only have the brush markers and I'm in love.
I tried the make-your-own version from the Frugal Crafter, and it was an absolute fail for me. Big mess, minimal sparkle. Now that they carry them at Michaels and Hobby Lobby and I can get them with a coupon, not worth the DIY hassle
I have the wink of Stella clear brush marker and love it! The first time I tried to use it I squeeze too hard and made a mess. But I didn't read the directions. I have no problems now and I love the shine you get with them.
I took the picture with my tablet. The camera is horrible on this thing.
I like how it tells you its not a cosmetic item! It does kind of look like mascara! My LSS sells them at $4.95 and Michaels wants $7.95 and doesn't even carry the clear, which in my opinion is all you really need...
In the Stampin' Up packaging there's also an insert with instructions that looks like this. And re: ink smearing yes - WOS is water-based and so is Real Red so they will activate each other
When I bought my first WOS I had seen videos on how to prime them but still read instructions on the back of package when I got them. I had to replace my clear WOS in the last couple months and noticed there were no instructions on the back. With this thread I opened my new WOS looking for a paper insert but there was not one. My curioscity getting the better of me I ripped open the package and they were printed on the inside left of the packaging. It is not obvious from just opening the package to get the pen out. There is a zipper pull near the right side of package down the back and at that point you can just lift out the pen. Now you have to clip the top and bottom of the left side open the flap a there's the instructions.
I have the clear, gold & silver but find I only use the clear. Good thing SU is including instructions inside their packageing or they would probably getting a lot of phone calls...LOL
clear is all I ever buy. As a matter of fact I bought another one today when I went to my LSS.they do pick up the color but when you're finished with a color you can just wipe it on a paper towel and it'll be clean again
I also love my winks and I'm kind of a nerd as I always check the package to see if there are instructions so I didn't have any problems.
I do find I use the clear the most but the red and the blue are stunning. Before I started using the winks my fav was the Jelly Roll startdust pens but the nice think about winks are that they never clog. Once I use up all my startdust pens I won't buy them again as I really prefer the winks.
I tried the wink markers and they dried out really fast. I don't know if I got a bad batch, but I'm not going to risk it again.
The first time I bought WOS there WERE directions on the package, but I don't think there are any more. Why, I ask. I gave a new one to my SU dealer because she didn't want to wait. When I saw her she said there was something wrong with it because it didn't work. I showed her about removing the ring. I looked for the instructions. NONE! And now it works fine. Hugs...Bobbi
My LSS told me yesterday that someone told her that theirs didn't work so she asked if they took off the black ring and she said no! Wonder why some packages didn't have instructions?
The instructions are printed on the inside left of the packaging. It's not obvious but you have to fold back the package flaps after removing the pen from it's zipper opening. Hope that makes sense.
Oooohhh, so some packaging, like mine, has instructions on the back and some have it on the inside of the package? They should have left it on the back! Its much more obvious to see it there.
I just got a clear wink of stella brush pen and I've been really disappointed with it. I thought the ink would be clear with glitter, but it colours everything silver. Clear is the microfine glitter suspended in clear medium. If your pen says "clear" on the cap, it may have been mistakenly placed on a silver body. Did you buy the pen open stock?

Makes sense as I just tested my clear and it's definitely clear on white paper.
One of my was clear on the cap but it was silver. I really liked the silver even on white cardstock, so I am glad that mine probably had the wrong cap on it.
I find the "clear" does have a silver cast on white paper. I believe the manufacturer must be aware of this because they do make a "white" color which is what I use on white paper. I really do like it for snow, frost and wintery images.
