What's the Difference??

I'm really wondering if there is a difference between what we normally call cardboard (the material a cereal box is made from) and chipboard?

There doesn't appear to be any difference to me. Yes, there can be differences in the thickness, but that's the same as with paper/cardstock or many other materials, including fabric.

I wonder if it was just someone in the paper industry that felt cardboard need a fancier name for crafters, so they used chipboard?

So......is there really a difference between cardboard or chipboard?

Anyone really know??

Not an expert by any means...but chipboard comes in varying thicknesses and doesn't have a finish or smoothness to it the way cardboard often does.

Betsy.....Thanks for the response, I can buy that explanation. Be interesting if anyone else has anything additional to say.

I also just did a search for both and found they are essentially the same thing. Just different people describe it differently.

Webster (in the 3 versions I have) doesn't even have the word chipboard.

I don't know for sure......but my thoughts are chipboard is used in the craft world and maybe it's manufactured to be "safe" (if it says it is) for the craft world. I personally have not seen anything referring to that but what I use it for doesn't matter so I always use the "Cardboard" off a cereal box LOL!! At my office everyone saves the backing on note pad for me too, LOL. I have them trained well!!

Probably just an excuse to charge more money, after all it isn't just plain ole' cardboard, this is 'chipboard'.
