Default What is the best Black Ink?

Other than Stazon for water proof needs... which Black Ink is the best? I am not so sure I am really happy with Stampin Up's black ink.

Would love to hear your views.

I think it depends on what you are using your black in for. If you are using copics to colour, you need a hybrid ink - my favourite is Memento Black . If you are using so called gamsol magic / or watercolouring - then Stazon Black is the best. If you want to stamp a fine image - and you are not worried about waterproof ink, or gamsol, copic proof ink - then I think Versafine is really good for stamping fine images. If you are reasonably quick with it, you can also emboss with Versa fine black.

SU black is fine - but limited in what it can do.

I have had really good luck with Ranger Archival Jet Black. I bought some Memento because everyone was raving about it here, but I haven't had good luck with it. It doesn't dry as fast as Ranger and seems to feather on some of my fine line images. For embossing, I use Versamark black and emboss with clear EP. Hope you find one you enjoy using!

Well -everyday stamping - I think Versfine black is a fabulous ink! But maybe Ranger Archival ink is too - I have not tried that one.

Copics yes - a pretty penny indeed!

Just goes to show that what works for some, doesn't necessarily work for others. The 2nd important element is the cardstock being used, IMO.

With SU's white, I cannot get Ranger's Archival Black to dry without heat-setting. Therefore, I avoid all of that extra work like the plague. ;) Yes, I understand that is "my" problem ... just sayin' ....

I can stamp Memento's black on Neenah White or Gina K's white and start coloring with Copics right away ... no delay. Truth is, that's what I normally do.

Again, it often seems that it's truly "different strokes for different folks", as I battled this out with a stamper over 2 years ago .. and we ended in total disagreement.

Go forth, and use what works best "for YOU"! ;)

I love the Palette ink for everything. I use the prisma/gamsol duo a lot, and also do some coloring with Copics, and this works well for all. I really like the fine detail you can achieve. It dries quickly, tho I will heat set if I'm going to use Copics (just in case).
For stamping with Distress inks, there's nothing like Archival, it's the best! Here's a link just in case you'd like to check out the info on Palette ink. Good luck!

totally agree. I've always found it fascinating how 2 stampers can have completely different reactions to a product like ink!!

Thinking about this I have black inks in the following:

SU Craft
Memento
Stazon
Versafine
Palette
Memories

I probably have more, but this is what comes to mind.

I love Versafine; it's great for use with water based color and Copics. It gives (me) a nice sharp image even on detailed stamps. I like Ancient Page as well although the black isn't quite as black, kwim? Pallate is great ink as well. It does depend a lot on what kind of surface you're stamping on, so much experimenting is needed.

Versafine all the way! I got so sick of having to pound and pound a stamp on the SU black ink pad to get a good inking; they dry out so fast and get all warped with lots of use. I tried versafine out of desperation and fell in love instantly! They last so long, give a perfect impression without any extra effort, and they work great with clear stamps. The only downside is that they take a few seconds to dry, but that is not a big deal at all. Hope this helps!

I've tried and I understand it to be good -but for me - it was just too dry!! Never liked it! As we've said - different inks for different folks!

And yes - Paper does make a big difference!

What's the best ink for Prismas? I have used memories and versafine and both
have smudged into my coloring. Especially when I'm using pastel colors. Muds it up even
if I let it dry overnite before coloring. HELP!!!

Sorry the Versafine isn't working for you. I use it for Prisma/OMS all the time and have never had a problem. It may be the paper you're using, too...that can make a big difference. Some folks like the Memento, but I've never used it. I found the Ancient Page coal black to be really good too.

Another option would be to emboss your stamp before coloring; that would prevent smearing and feathering.

Good luck!

The cardstock is a possible culprit. A "matte' seems to work best for me ... but SU's 'polished' surface seems to bleed with various inks for me. I guess my suggestion is to consider trying a different style/brand of cardstock. ;)
