Using markes on the rubber

Is there a secret to using markers to ink up a stamp? I have tried light touch, tiny little circles and other various ways but every time I stamp it out it looks streaked or blotchy. Yes, I huff on it and spritzing with water didn't help either. I would appreciate any tips on doing this for a solid stamp. I have no problems for the outline stamp or words.

I use the side of the marker, not the tip, and that is what works for me.
