Default Tim Holtz Tutorials

In the last week I've become very interested in Distress Inks and have been watching Tim Holtz tutorials on You Tube. Can anyone tell me why he only stamps on tags? I don't get it. Why wouldn't he stamp on cardstock? I would never dream of doing such great techniques and designs on tags. Am I missing something that's very obvious?

I'm with you - I don't get it either. Although I think he is a tremendously talented artist and designer, I would not go to that much trouble for a tag. I've watched some of his Christmas countdown tag tutorials, and the steps and processes are very, very elaborate and time-consuming.

I guess you could transfer his techniques and other ideas to cards without too much trouble. (On the other hand, I probably wouldn't go to that much trouble for a card, either, lol. But that's just me.)

Tim does do things besides tags on occasion here's one: stamps and texture fades… | Tim Holtz

He is about the techniques though, so he uses tags. Here's a fun podcast: stamps and texture fades… | Tim Holtz (You may have to sign up to listen.)

I did his Creative Chemistry class through Online Card Classes last summer. It wasn't interactive, I just paid and got access to the videos and PDF handouts. He demonstrated how to use most of his product line and did some very cool things. All on tags.

I don't get the tags thing either. In fact, when I do his wet Distress techniques, I only use watercolor paper because anything like card stock just degrades and dries all wavy and weird. If you use watercolor paper for wrinkle free distress, for instance, you can layer and dry and layer and dry over and over and get great results.

I have seen a lot of people do the tags and then incorporate them into the card. It's a very vintage look. Maybe that's why the tags - they are very vintage looking in and of themselves and Tim Holtz is all about vintage.

Welcome to Distress Inks! I love them! You can do lots of very cool things with them that you can't do with any other kind of ink.

I think he uses tags mainly as a teaching tool. I know of quite a few (me included) who take the tags and make a "techniques" reference book.

I know in his Chemistry 101 course it comes complete with labels to go on the back of the tags that list the products used etc.

I purchased his tag die so I can cut my own paper (watercolor etc.) to use.

As stated above by some others, t!m is all about teaching techniques and how to use products and how to combine products. His online creative chemistry class was as close as I could get to Ranger University (since I'm a retail customer) and it was terrific - all about learning the properties and characteristics of many diverse mediums and what all you can do with them.
