I'm a bit conflicted at the moment. Just starting out in my card making venture by investing in SU set of rich regals and the spots. I've had fun, definitely discovered what I like and don't like and was getting ready to order the soft subtles when I found out the colours are changing soon. I like the soft subtles, but not all of them, and I definitely think I will like the new ones better. But if I wait, I don't have much to work with in the meantime. You really need to combine the rich regals with other card stock. I think I'll get a set of the neutrals with the markers, but then not sure what to do. Should I just get a few individual colours and ink pads? Can anyone suggest some really versatile colours? Any suggestions?

Blush Blossom is great skin tone color if you like to do punch art.
Sage Shadow is very nice with a dark green like Handsome Hunter.
Mellow Moss is really a neutral in my opinion and is great for earthy card like flowers or trees.
Almost Amethyst is beautiful with Elegant Eggplant.
Rose Red may be my all time favorite SU color. It's beautiful with Old Olive or Garden Green. And there is a super pretty designer seriest paper called Raspberry Tart on the Clearance Rack right now that uses that color with Pretty in Pink.
If you get a multipack of the Soft Subtles now, it's not too much of an investment and you can pair them easily with the Rich Regals that you already have and just use RR ink on the SS cardstock. And check out the Clearance Rack for some great deals on patterned paper and accessories.
Out of the CURRENT Soft Subtles line-up the four colors that are staying are:
Perfect Plum, Pretty in Pink, Bashful Blue and Certainly Celery.
I think if you buy an assortment pack of the Soft Subtles paper, and only one or two ink pads of one of the four colors that are staying you'll be good to go. Add in a neutral like the Vanilla, or Kraft paper and you should have plenty to keep you busy until the new catalog comes out....June 1st I think. Really need an SU Demo to pop in here and verify that though. It might not be until July 1st.
Either way, depending on your craft budget you might not want to go overboard right now. The new color line-up is pretty, not to mention all the new stamps and accessories you'll probably want once that new catalog is available!
But I agree a few ink pads along with some neutrals that are staying is all you need along with an assorted pack of Soft Subtles cardstock. That'll keep you busy for some time.
it depends - if you buy the ink pads as a group you do save a bit of money vs buying them individually. So if you're thinking of getting the new subtles - I would wait and buy all 10 of the subtles at once - in the past buying as a group was cheaper than the cost of each of the inkpads separately - did that make sense?
maybe if there is a color for the NEW regals that you don't have in the ones you just bought than fill that color or two in??
But I agree a few ink pads along with some neutrals that are staying is all you need along with an assorted pack of Soft Subtles cardstock. That'll keep you busy for some time.
Stampin' Up! Demo chiming in here: Yes, you are correct. New catty is live on July 1st, 2010 for 1 year.
Thank you so much for your advice! You can tell I'm a newbie--it never occurred to me to buy the cardstock and not the ink. July eh? We're a bit behind in NZ as I have been told it's coming out in September. Too long to wait really so I really do need some supplies.

I am sooo disappointed that so many soft subtles will be discontinued. If you really like them, get the pads and ink refills. I have my pads from 10 years ago. And the markers from then too are still good! I wish I could put in a big paper order. I will NOT miss blush blossom, never liked it.
You might just want to get a set of ink spots in the soft subtles. That way you'll have something to work with at a much lower price. It will also give you a chance to see if there are any colors you just have to have a full pad of before they go away. Then you'll also have them to work with after they are retired until they dry out.
I was disappointed too... HOWEVER, I decided to order the refill inks in the colors I wanted. My SU demo showed us a trick in a techniques class where we used baby wipes with drops of ink on them...That is probably a long known technique, but new to me... SO I got the bright idea that I could make my own ink pads with the baby wipes. The refills go a LONG way. Can't wait to get them!!
I am thinking of becoming a demo next year during Sale-A-Bration for the discount on product. I can EASILY spend 300.00 in a quarter. LOL
Thanks everyone! I just received my Soft Subtles cardstock, a pack of chocolate chip and another pack of Rich Regals (which I've already got the spots for). I love the Soft Subtles and can't wait to start putting them together. I didn't get any inks except I decided to get a marker for certainly celery and chocolate chip. That will give me some variety and if I need others I'll get more. That should take me through to the new catalogue in September. Can't wait!

get what you like and buy a reinker IMHO, I was fortunate enough to buy all 48 pads freshly inked from a friend who is movie and i LOVE them! I will need to buy some reinkers tho before they are discontinued. You might be able to buy some second hand from demos here as they probably will not want them after the swichover, you could post a want ad in the buy/sell thread. I'm glad I got mine even though they will be retired. I have to share, I found a great plan to make an inkpad holder from the rebel inker and here is how it came out:
