Default SU! Markers - what do you use them for?

Hi!

I'm FINALLY considering buying some SU! markers... I've been stamping for about 4 years and always talk myself out of them somehow!

I keep going back and forth, thinking "I *need* to have three sets" and then "No, I can just pick out the colors I really like".

So in helping me making this decision, I'd like to know: What, besides coloring on your stamp and coloring in images, do you use your markers for? I am honestly at a loss as to why I need them... but I still feel I do!

Can anyone help me?

TIA!

You can use the Color Spritzer Tool on page185 in the catty that attaches to the markers and it makes a neat splatter speckle look.

Shelby~ Save your money! I just took a look at your gallery and I think you do a dang awesome job without them!!!! Holy smokes!!! Seriously...

To answer your question, I only use mine to scrapbook, sign my name on the back of the card, color in images, and ink stamps. I have only been at this for about 8 months, so I am not a good one to answer...but I did want to tell you how talented you are!!

I also use them for watercoloring. You just scribble the marker in the cover of your inkpad - that way you don't have to squish on the inkpad. Then I pick up the color with a waterbrush.

It took me many years to invest in them, too. But, honestly, I feel like I use them even more than many of my inkpads. I would reccomend buying the color family sets (or the whole set, if you can) if you're thinking about using them for watercoloring. If I had only picked out my fave colors, I wouldn't have any options for tree trunks, leaves, ground & shadows (gray), etc. I do only have 3 of the 4 families and that works for me as I don't tend to use Rich Regals very much.

I don't want to get the whole set because:
1. I never, ever use Bold Brights. Well, maybe Tempting Turquoise or Real Red once in a blue moon, but you get the idea.
2. It's cheaper (by like, $7 here in Canada) to buy each set separately.
3. I don't have anywhere to store the marker case and am not that impressed with it anyway. I have space to store the flat packages that each color family come in.

I won't be watercoloring with them, as I have *all* the inkpads (except last year's In Colors) and a large majority of the reinkers. Since I've been doing this for a while now, most of my ink pads have already been smooshed. I also have WWC, Watercolor Pencils, and Pastels. I don't really need the markers as a coloring medium.

I guess the reason I really want them is to be able to color my stamps different colors. But, since I haven't had them, I've kind of avoided those images and don't have a lot in my collection. If this is the only reason I want them, spending $135 is probably kind of silly, hey?

Since you have all the ink pads you probably don't NEED the markers. I bought the markers instead of buying all the pads, so that I could use any color I wanted to make it match with the CS.

If you have all the ink pads, and most of the reinkers... I'd just buy a some blender pens and use those. You can either press on your ink pad to pool the ink in the lid, or use a dab of your reinker, dip in the blender pen and instant marker! Save your money for the stuff you really think you will use.

I use mine a ton. I mainly use them to color in my images, sign my cards, use them to ink up solid stamps with different colors (like Wild About You), etc. I don't have ink pads of all colors, but I have all the markers. I can use them in a pinch to ink up a stamp too!

For some stamps it's great to be able to color different parts of the stamp with the markers and shade right on the stamp. You wouldn't need them all, maybe just your favorite color family.

Here's a card I did with coloring directly onto the stamp with the markers.

Kiko - your card is exactly why I want them!! Gorgeous, BTW! I plan on getting Garden Silhouettes, which I think lends itself nicely to markers... but again - reason enough to buy them? I also can't decide which is my favorite family! I use LOTS of colors from RR, EE, and SS!! However, I *do* also have a friend who owns all of them, and I see her weekly... so if I *need* them, I guess I could always borrow...

Can you believe I've been debating this since the new catty came out?

I mainly use my markers for marking directly on a stamp and writing a message inside a card.

I use mine mostly for coloring and for stamping when I don't have the ink pad. I do some when I want multiple colors, but not much.

I bought them cuz:
a. I love to color
b. I had no SU! inkpads.

So you don't need them for ANY of my reasons!!
If I had all the inkpads, I pry would just skip them. I also like chalks and blender pens for coloring...

You have a beautiful gallery! Inking to the rubber would be the most obvious benefit of the markers. I have craft spots so I can get around needing the markers buy just dabbing the spot. I really dont have the patience to color on rubber.
As far as coloring in images with marker, I've got my eye out on the alcohol based markers (copic, prismacolor)

This is how I use mine (in order of importance) :
1) write the personal part of a card/sentiment on inside

2) sign my name to back and card info (i.e. # & date),

3) color-coordinated faux stitching/doodling,

4) color image

5) multi-colored image to stamp (like flower/stem)

6) color only certain parts of a stamp (just words/just image)

7) spritzer tool to splatter ink

Hello...I ahve actually had mine for years and don't use them all the time on my projects but I am a little compulsive and like to use the pens to write in the cards and to address the envelopes...so they match the stamping on the card/envelope.

I also use them for the coloring on the stamps when I want/need different colors.

I will say that I have had them since they first came out with the entire set and they are all still very juicy and work great

I am sure I did not "need" them but it is actually one of those things that I use pretty much anytime I send a card since I am writing in them.

I have used them for coloring stamps, but since that's a time consuming way to stamp, I hardly ever do it that way.

I love to use the fine points for writing - love how the colors match.

Used to color images with them, but really like using my reinkers and blender pen or a watercolor brush better.

If I didn't have them, I wouldn't miss them, really. And right now, everyone is getting so excited about the Copic pens.

Thanks for all the input, everyone!

I think I'll hold off (again) for now... buy more ribbon and stamp sets! ;)

I bought the set flat out when I bought all my ink pads and my first order about 5 years ago.

I wouldnt say that I use them a lot, when I color an image I usually use the watercolor brushes and either ink or the crayons. And then after watercoloring I enjoy using the prismacolor pencils and OMS.

If youve gone this long without getting them then I would say skip it. But if you DO buy them then just buy it in the whole set for two reasons...

1) You NEVER know when you will need that other color and dear heavens it is annoying when you dont have it.

2) If you get them and decide you dont want them you can sell them on ebay and it will be a whole lot easier to sell a complete set in the real box then in the little individual boxes. Especially if you were to sell them at the same time people would ask you "is the BB for sale"...you'll get more money back on them.

Well, my budget IS limited - this is my only big purchase of the year, so I'd really rather not spend the extra $50 on colors I'll NEVER use. I'd much rather have ribbon or DP or a set that I'm absolutely in love with. I've used my BB pads maybe 5 times in 4 years. Plus, I don't sell on E-Bay, so that's not an issue.

I LOVE SU Markers. Some colors I even have an ink pad and marker in. I use them to omit things on the stamp or else color certain parts one color and other parts another color although done wrong this looks very tacky. Also I love that I can journal in the same color that I stamp in for scrapbooking, and even cardmaking. I would suggest black first if you have to get one just to try it out. I wouldn't be without my markers!

I was only suggesting ebay so you felt like you had an option to recoup the costs in case you decide you dont like them.

Maybe your friend who has them would let you borrow them for a bit to see how you like to stamp with them?

Default watercolor technique

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is coloring directly on the stamp & then spritzing the inked stamp with water. This gives a beautiful watercolored look and is especially nice on flowers & leaves--for a Fall look.

I love the one set I have. I bought RR and use them quite often, Close as a Memory is one of my fave sets I use that floral stamp on all kinds of cards and it's beautiful coloring it with markers. I just opened my color spritzer tool that I bought early in the catalog last year and I have no idea why I waited to use the thing it makes such pretty backgrounds. I had planed on getting more or the markers possibly the SS and EE but still have not I'm happy with the one set I have.

I waited 4 years before I bought my markers. I had Le Plume & I thought they were good enough. uh no, they weren't! lol I am lovin these markers! Not to open a whole other can of worms but if I only had money for one big purchase it would be the water color crayons...you do have the WWC don't you?

I purchased mine one color family at a time and I'm glad I did. For all the same reasons you listed. I'm glad I have them, they come in handy. You'll wonder how you got along without the. I use mine for coloring stamps and images. I like to watercolor but sometimes you just need the dark rich color of a marker. If cost is keeping you from getting them, get one color family a month maybe after you buy one, you know better whether you'd like any more.

Remember life before a 'puter and the internet? (OK, so if you're too young for that I don't want to know!) And now you have it and can't imagine what you did before then? Markers are like that.

I love my SU markers. Had them for a while. Glad too because they went up quite a bit in the new catty. I use them to color direct to rubber. They are the only ones I use. My Mom on the other hand has them, but loves her Marvy's...

I'd suggest buying one color family at a time too. You'll appreciate them more.

Well... we've only had computers since I was in the 8th grade... does that make me old enough? ;)

I think I've decided to buy at least one set. Or some singles. I was coloring the flower stamp from Happy Harmony today and after I took off some of the purple ink from the stem of the flower and recolored it with a Q-Tip, I realized that I actually have several stamp sets where they would come in handy. And the Q-Tip thing is a rather large PITA, IMHO!! Now for the decision-making process.

I have the SU markers and have been very happy with them. My demo did a marker club a couple of year ago, so the cost was spread out over 4 months and at the end each person had all the markers plus the big storage box. We also agreed to 'bump up' our orders enough so each person got hostess benefits when they got their box.

This thread has some good information on one way a marker club can be done:

I like the whole set & carrier that I have (SU) because I don't buy ALL the stamp pads. And if I want to water color, I can use my paint brush to the brush end of the marker to color. I, also, like to color different parts of the stamp different colors & then stamp. Or use my marker on just part of a saying (eliminating the other words). I just love them.

By the way, I've had mine forever...........when SU first went exclusive & they are still as juicy as the day I bought them. They are definitely worth the money.

Just the fact that you can use them on stamps should be reason enough I just did a card and needed two colors on a stamp and I couldn't have done it without the markers. If you don't have all the ink pads this is a way to also have all of the colors.

I use mine to color chipboard, too! I found it really easy and not as messy as doing direct from ink pad...

HTH!
