I have seen the Lyra crayons in action, but not the Stampin Up ones. I was originally going to get the Lyra crayons but someone mentioned that the Stampin Up ones are made by Lyra.
I emailed Stampin Up in Australia and they said they would ask their product deparment and I never heard back from them. So I asked them whether they had any luck and the same person then responded that they don't provide that information.
Well it doesn't say on the tin. But the tin does say made in Germany. And from what I can tell it looks like Lyra is a german company so they might be...
Haven't looked for the threads here, but I am certain that other SCSers have said they are made by Lyra. Was going to get them at my local art store with a coupon when I read that, but went for Copics... But people here definitely say they are made by Lyra. The colors are not exactly the same, however, if that matters to you (but if you get a large set, one would imagine you would be fine... but then again, I am not a SU exact match person, so you may want to ask around if you are).
I have the lyra and the Su ones, and the Lyra is much smoother and has better colors. Su ones are a bit harder. If you can get one, I would buy the Lyra, more colors --- More choices
If you look at the back page in the Stampin' Up! Catalogs. You will fine a list of Trademark Ownerships. This is where they list the supplies they carry and who provides them.
I'm this close to signing up and becoming a SU demo, but I have always wanted the Lyra crayons and then I thought argh maybe I should invest in the SU crayons so I can demo them to help pay for them...and I also thought the colours would then match all the other SU stuff.
And you scrappingmelissa! LOL you're saying the Lyra ones are better...argh!!
I'm going to do a little more digging on here to see if I can find any of the older discussion.
Thanks very much for everyone taking the time to respond. This would have been such an easier decision when the US dollar against the Aussie dollar was better as the Lyra were cheap if I bought them from the US. Now they are expensive and fairly on par with SU ones.
I believe the SU crayons were about $60. for a full set (and only came in a full set of 4 when they first came out. HR Meininger Art Supply in Denver had them at the time in small sets 6 or 12 or 24 etc. at the time but also had a very large color selection, probable 150 or so, priced individually at $1.65 each. I haven't bought any for a long time but the last time I was in the still carried them. They are called Neocolor II and are made in Switzerland.
They work as well or better than SU and you can buy indivdual crayons. They last forever.
in my opinion,The lyra is better. You get more for your dollar. They are larger than SU, and you can get 48 of them in a nice tin for 69.95 at The Angel Company.
Su Ones are shorter and the colors are not as vibrant as Lyra's.
