Thank you for your feedback. Ive done my homework (lots of investigating ..lol) and here is what i've found out.

The deal at massdrop includes:

Deluxe Bundle includes:

The Silhouette Cameo
12" Cutting Mat
$10 Gift Card for the Silhouette Online Store
51 Exclusive designs
Cameo Studio Software
USB and power cables

PLUS: Bonus Items...

Silhouette Studio, Designer Edition ($50 Value) which lets you cut SVG files (works with Stampin Ups MDS Software)
Extra 12" Cutting Mat ($20 Value)
Silhouette Hook, Scraper, and Spatula ($17 Value)
$25 gift card for the Silhouette Online Store ($25 Value)
Free shipping in the USA! ($15 Value)

Massdrop is a reputable company. They negotiate the best price on certain items with a vendor, in this case its Silhouette America. The silhouette Cameo has been advertised on Massdrop at least 3 other times this past year and has had success with hundreds of buyers. Massdrop works by accumulating enough interested buyers to get the lowest price. $269 is already a great price for this bundle. (Price could go down to $249 with enough buyers) You are not charged until the minimum buyers are reached. I've joined this buy and cant wait for my silhouette cameo to arrive.

Prices at Amazon and home shopping network seem reasonable but don't include all the bonus items (like the extra $50 software which im looking for) so Massdrop has a smokin' deal right now. Go check it out!

Default Dingbats/Shapes Dies & Silhouette Packet Size

I found the best dingbat font that you can download for free: 09 KutUps; it has almost every shape imaginable: circles, squares, rectangles, ovals, tags, with plain and scalloped edges. If I'd had my Cameo and these dingbats, I could have saved a LOT of money by not buying dies. The download link is in the 2nd paragraph on this page; there's even a character map you can download and print so you can tell which shape belongs to each corresponding letter:

New free dingbat font for die cutters | Clever Someday

Also, if you're having trouble with intricate cuts, and have tried some of the workarounds given here, here's another thing you might try. Change the packet size (which is the amount of information sent from your computer to your cutting machine):

Open your Silhouette software, click File, Preferences, Advanced, and under Packet size, select 500 bytes and then select OK.

This will help if your computer is sending information to the Silhouette faster than it can cut.

Santa brought me a Portrait for Christmas. I already own a Cuttlebug, Big Shot, and 2 Cricuts. I love them all and use them all for different things. I have plenty of room since I have a dedicated "craft room". But I have to say I LOVE this baby Silhouette--it cuts like butter! And Santa got a great deal on this--the machine with 1 blade and mat, the tools--pick, spatula, scraper and paper picker upper, machine cover, upgrade to Designer, a $10 and $25 gift cards and free shipping for $129.

I have a old Silhouette I've never used, but hopefully will soon. I just want to be able to cut words out for right now. I have lots of dies I use with my Cuttlebug but for some reason have never sat down to learn the Silhouette.

Default Multi Image Project

Hi - does anyone have any advice for importing downloaded .svg files for projects? I have downloaded a project that consists of about a half dozen separate image files that I'll have to import. My first thought is to create a folder and import all of the files into the project folder. Also, there is an instruction file. How do you store/reference the instructions? This Silhouette newbie would like to know if you more experienced users have any other ideas. Thanks!

OK...You have sold me on buying the Silhouette Portrait. Is the only other thing I need to buy for it a spatula? Where did those of you who have it purchased it? On Silhouette America it is $179.99 and the spatula is $6.99. LM

You don't need the spatula from Silhouette. I use artist palette knives or cake decorating knives. I get different widths going this route. Buying different widths is actually better, IMO, because many of the designs for the Silhouette are detailed. It's easier to lift a doily, for example, off the mat with a narrower knife than the normal spatula's that are sold by the die cutting companies. Another plus the knives are usually cheaper and better constructed. Congrats on your Portrait.

I have read some posts on this thread that say that they are having a hard time cutting SU Cardstock. I am SU Only so I need to know before I buy the Portrait if this is really a problem, or if the correct settings will resolve this? And if so, what are the settings? LM

SU cardstock does not work well with my Silhouette. (especially the smaller cuts) The SU coordintations paper works well with it.

I use SU cardstock all the time with the setting for 110 lb cardstock AND double cut. I dont have any problems using these settings on the Cameo to cut the heavy SU cardstock.
Blessings.

I have wasted 3 sheets of SU c.s today trying to get it to cut without tearing. Sooo frustrating as I have a heap of their c.s. Finally gave up and went back to the Kaiser c.s. It's not as heavy as the SU but is does cut without any problems. Settings I use are Blade on 5, Thickness on 28. Depending on how intricate I generally use a speed of 3.

I live in a regional town in QLD Australia and unfortunately have very little resources to just 'duck out' to grab something. Most of my supplies are ordered online.

We do have a local Spotlight store and they have the AC 12x12 cs stack but very expensive, so I am hesitant to buy it in case I have problems with it in my Silhoutte.

So disappointed I can't use SU. I was talking to a lady today who has a cricut and she said she has the same problem with SU c.s.

I cut SU CS with no problem. I use the setting 'textured CS' (even though I am using smooth CS) and only need to single cut. The blade is at 5. The speed and thickness I think are at 3 and 33.

I just got my Cameo and I'm using my blade at 4, speed 3 & thickness 33 (whatever the defaults are for blade at 4). I haven't had any problems, so far. But, I did hear from a friend that SU cardstock is hard on the blades (they dull sooner), so I'm going to purchase a couple to have on hand, just in case.

I'm not sure where to post this but since I have links to a lot of free cutting file locations, I thought it might be good to post here:
Awash with Color: Free Stuff for Scrapbooking and Crafts
These are places I check regularly for free cutting files, digital files (images/stamps), and fonts (some scrapbook layouts and other misc. stuff as well). If you know of any good ones that I haven't listed, please leave me a comment! Thanks!

Default Two Questions

So I just started using sketch pens with my silhouette and I love it! How long does the sketch pens last? I did some simple sketches of flowers. Really cute. I have to get the pen holder. I love this because my handwriting in the worse on earth .

Storing silhouette cut files. Where do you store them? I have 350 files in my library . Now it seems like it is moving very sluggish. I'm thinking it has something to do with all the new files? Do you store your files in the library?

I only have a few files stored in the library. All my other files are organized in folders by theme. It is on my desktop but it doesnt really matter where the folder is. I noticed early on that SSDE loads all the files when starting and figured it would end up getting too slow with all my files in the library.

You need to check out HotPaws Pen Tools for the Silhouette Cameo/Portrait, as they work with many different pens and the price point is really great...only around $16. Here is a link to her site: Crafting with SueR: Shopping Page Pen Tool

Also, I want to let you know what I do with my files. I set up a folder in "Documents" that I simply named "Cutting Files" and in that folder there are sub-folders and I keep all cutting files there. I have several different cutters so there are several different file types. For each file I have included a jpg image so that I can see when I go to the folder what each file looks like. Here are some screen captures I made that may help you.

This is an image of the sub-folders:

and here is an image of one of the sub-folders opened up:

Hope this helps you!!!

I love that file set up. I already added an extra folder to my Library. I didn't know you could save the files individually! I may even upload to drop box. I back up most of my files to dropbox.

Yorkiemom how does this pen holder differ from the silhouette pen holder? The silhouette holder is $10.

Leona.....the HotPaws Pen Tools enables you to use many more sizes of pens. Sue (aka/HotPaws) and I served together on the Pazzles Design Team in 2009 and she designed her Pen Tool to take care of many sizes, plus be more affordable for crafters. With the Silhouette holder, you are limited to the pen sizes...I know because I have the one that came with my Craft Robo, which was the original Silhouette machine. I have Sue's Pen Holders for my Pazzles, my Cameo and my CraftRobo. If you go to my blog, you will see that I've used her Pen Tool on quite a few projects. One of the pens that I love to use is the PaperMate EraserMate pen, which stays wet and enables me to use embossing powder and my heat gun!

Here is a link to a birthday card that I actually made for Sue back in 2011 and I used her Pen Tool on it!

I have both a Cameo and an Expression and would love to know how your DH does this. This is not an inexpensive hobby and not having to buy blades constantly would really help! What abrasive cream?

Read thru all this post and loved the people and the info. I wanted to put my vote in for Michael's "Recollections" paper, too. I've tried many and this cuts beautifully, even intricate cuts. (Speed 1, Thickness 33, Blade 4, single cut - newish blade). The paper's on sale this week.

I have never owned an electronic cutter but would love to have one but I'm not clear on exactly what I would need for what I would like to do. It seems like the Cameo has a lot of features that are great - like printing - unlike the ScanNCut. If you stamped an image on cardstock, how would you get the Cameo to cut out an outline of that stamped object or can't it do that? I know you can import files to Cameo and have it cut an outline of the image but what if something is just stamped on a piece of cardstock. Is there a way the Cameo can recognize the image and cut an outline around it like the SNC?

No, the Cameo can't do this. At least not in the easy way I think you are wanting. You can scan the stamp into your computer and from there import it into Silhouette software to make an out line file. From there you can cut out the outline, but you will have to stamp the image onto the outline each time. I did see a tutorial a long time ago about how to cut pre-stamped images using the cameo, but it was very involved and as far as I'm concerned a PITA. To much work for me. SNC is the only machine at this time that can cut pre-stamped and colored images easily. All you do is scan the images directly into the machine (no other cutter does this), and then select your image to cut. Easy Peasy.

Oh, also the Cameo does not print by itself. You still need an external printer to print, the file prints out with registration marks that the Cameo then recognizes to cut.

Really? The Silhouette can't do this? I am so confused. I had just decided to get the Silhouette Portrait because the price is so much more reasonable than the Scan 'N Cut (even though I would prefer the SNC). But the main thing I want to do is stamp with a rubber stamp onto cardstock, and then have my machine cut it, and cut larger mats of the shape as well. If this is a pain in the neck on the Silhouette, then it is not for me. But I am going to have to wait a LONG time to to buy a SNC. LM
