Question Should I design a special scissors for cutting and curling ribbons?

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to this forum, and just bumped into it while researching a new product idea. I noticed that this is where all the experts hang out, and I'd like to ask for your help.

I'm a designer, and I was thinking about the 'curling ribbon' problem: I always fold open the scissors and then use my thumb to push a ribbon against it to curl it.. And I hate it

So I was thinking about maybe designing something better! A scissors which has a special function for curling ribbons (so you don't have to fold it open) and for splitting ribbons up. And of course for cutting them.

Now I already found a couple of products* who do one or two of these things.
But what I haven't found is a product that:
- Cuts paper
- Cuts ribbons
- Curls ribbons
- Shreds ribbons

So my question of the day is: Would you guys & girls like a special product for cutting paper and ribbons, curling ribbons and shredding ribbons?

And would you spend like 15$ on it? Or would it just be an extra, 'meh' kind of product, because you are already so experienced and good with your hands that you can do all those things without extra help from a product?

Thank you VERY much in advance for any feedback! It's highly appreciated!!

Regards, Bartjan
(working for my own company, the Nuts & Bold Design Studio)

PS: I'd love to post pictures of excisting products but since I'm new to this forum I can't post URLs yet, so I'll describe some of the products already on the market: there's the 3M Scotch paper cutter and ribbon curler, the fiskars paper cutter and ribbon curler, and finally there are lots of ribbon shredders/curlers. I haven't found any tool that does everything in an intuitive way though!

All of the ribbon I use on my cards is of the "fabric" variety so I don't think you can curl it with any type of scissor.

It's a great idea, but I probably wouldn't use it unless it worked on the kind of ribbon that is polyester fabric. I don't use wrapping paper type of ribbon that you can curl with scissors.

Good luck to you!

I agree, I don't use curling ribbon either. Maybe floral crafters/ or people who wrap a lot gifts would appreciate that sort of a tool though.

I would agree, I don't use curling ribbon on any of my paper crafting projects or cards etc.. that said when I'm wrapping Christmas gifts or birthday gifts I'd definitely like something since like you I use the whole open scissor routine. I'd like my 8yr old to be able to curl ribbons but I'm not about to let her do it the way I do. That said I'd be more comfortable spending around $5-$10 tops for something that does this.

I agree with what everyone else has said. And in addition, I've noticed that if I cut paper with the same scissors I cut ribbon with it seems to dull them. So I have "ribbon only" scissors and "paper only" scissors. And that has worked well for me.

Thanks for your feedback everyone! It's greatly appreciated!

Looks like I'm gonna have to find some serious gift-wrappers to get more info :-) Maybe they have a blossoming community somewhere such as this one

Thanks Candi for the specific price info!
