Default Scoring w/ Cutting Tool

I have two different Cutting/scoring tools, Fiskars and Cricut. But I never seem to get an accurate score. No matter how many times I try it is always a hair off from center for my cards. I believe it is because the scoring measurement is right on the edge of the tool and very difficult to judge (4 1/4 inch mark) Are there any products or techniques that you can suggest that will work better than trial and error??

Default Scoring

Rather than buy another new tool, I finally gave in a few months ago and simply make a small pencil mark at the card middle top and bottom and then firmly run my embossing stylus (or a small steel crochet hook) between the 2 marks.
... = perfect every time IF I've cut the card straight
