Actually I use that same one or my Carl RT200? I think it's called (I got it at Sam's Club).
If your layers are coming out uneven, you may want to take your time and cut a little slower and hold the paper down firmly. I find that if I'm trying to go too fast, then I end up w/wavy cuts.
Mine cuts crooked too and I cant stand it ... drives me crazy! I also got a replacement thingie but its no better whatsoever. I'm interested in seeing some responses too. It doesnt matter if I cut slow or faster, I get the same result.
When I see everyone's wonderful layers I get so sad :(
I have the fiskars 12" Portable Paper Trimmer, the one with the orange cutter, that slides back and forth?
It cannot cut a straight line. I've called them, and they sent a replacement ruler thingie, but it is no better.
I know there must be better things out there, as you guys rock on your layers.
What trimmer/cutter ROCKS the best?
I have this, and had the same problems... But I realized that my "un-straight" (they're not really crooked, they're just un-straight!) lines came from pressing too hard on the orange cutter thing. When I press lightly, the line is perfect.
I also have the new fiskars cutter that is in the current catty. This one seems to be sturdier - i.e. pressing too hard doesn't have as much of an effect - but I find the ruler difficult to use some times since the one edge of the cutter is curved.
the problem with that cutter is that the plastic cutter guide is wider than the blade. So when you press really hare the blade will wobble all over in the guide giving a crooked line. I found that if I gently squeeze the guide when I cut, then the line is much straiter.
I hardly use that trimmer though since I bought my new cutter. It is Fiskars brand and can cut paper up to 12 and 1/2 inches wide. It has a rotating blade and a romovable cutting board. i like mine so much i bought one for a friend(flyboy's wife).

I have the Fiskars Rotary trimmer and I love it. I have the blade for scoring, too and everyone wants me to score their paper for them since it makes the best, nice, straight scoring line. The only thing that I don't like is that I have to unscrew the part the blade is in to change it from cutting to scoring blades so I try to score everything that I need so I don't have to stop and change the blade in the middle of cutting. Other than that, I love it.
I have a Carl RT200 that I bought locally at a craft store (with a 40% coupon!) and I love it. Straight cuts everytime. Before this cutter I had a Fiskars rotary cutter and I used that one to death -- I literally wore it out. The Carl is also a rotary cutter -- I just think they work better. I hate the Fiskars cutters with the sliding blade . . . worthless IMHO.
I use a Carl RT-200 when I have the space to leave it out on the table. I also use my Zision 12" and Fiskars triple track 9" when space is an issue. For all fine shaving cuts, especially on pieces that won't fit in my Carl, I use a metal ruler and a handheld rotary Fiskars cutter.
I have a Fiskars Euro trimmer. It has the "triple track" and supposedly that is supposed to prevent uneven lines, etc. It has worked very well for me. Before this one I just had the regular Fiskars trimmer and it always cut uneven.

I also have this trimmer -- those extra little guides on the blade cartridge make a world of difference by keeping the blade from pushing outward on the slot, widening it and making the blade "wobble" as you move it.

Which Fiskars Rotary is this? I checked JoAnn's online and there's about 3 different Fiskar's Rotary cutters.
Thanks!!

I have the large Fiskars rotary too and love it! On Jo-Anns it's the 12" rotary that is $59.99. I got mine at Michael's and used my 40% coupon years ago and I've only had to change the blade once. I also have the perf. and deckle blades too.
I think the portable 12" fiskars trimmers aren't the best, the channel that the blade slides in gets stretched and then they don't cut straight, when I worked at my LSS we always got complaints about them! The cutterpede is nice if you can get used to the way the arm lifts, it seemed awkward to me, but I'm a lefty
I too have the fiskars rotary cutter. It is the 12" Rotary Cutter for crafts. I too have a scoring blade for it but also have a deckle blade, and perforating blade. I LOVE mine.. Actually I like it soo much I have 2 of them. They sell for $30 or so at Michaels and I just wait to use a 40% or a 50% and it is an awesome deal.
I had one with the moving orange blade but couldn't cut straight either and you can't do more than 2 cardstocks. I can do up to 5 on mine now!
Genesis paper trimmer !!! They are a huge investment, extremely long wait to get one but oh so worth it!
Holy cow you weren't kidding on the investment part. I use the Fiskers 12x12 cutter and it's just pressure that makes the guide bow in the middle. Practice with some cheap paper it really does work if you don't press as hard.
The main problem with the Cutterpede is that replacement parts can be hard to find. I've seen this cutter in Walmarts in the US, but they don't carry replacement cutting mat strip things, nor the different edges of blades. Plus, when you finally do need to replace your cutting blade, it is relatively pricey because you have to buy a whole new blade+housing (I've seen them for ~$5 US online). The only other negative comments I've heard about the Cutterpede are that it is a little bulkier than the flat Fiskars personal trimmers, and some folks have found it doesn't cut perfectly straight even when new. (When it starts cutting wonky, generally you need to flip over your cutting mat strip thingy to a fresh side.)
So, if you are not averse to online shopping to get different styles of blade and stockpiling the replacement parts, it is a great little cutter from what I've read! (Unless you are really fussy about having exactly straight cuts, in which case only a Genesis trimmer or a metal ruler and rotary hand cutter would satisfy you ). HTH!
Glad to hear it's not just me...what about SU's new table top paper cutter???? It doesn't list anywhere the size of the thing? Wonder if it's big enough for 12x12 paper????? Anyone know?
I have the creative memories 12 cutter and love it. I cut alot of paper for cards and scraping and just had to get a new blade. Yes I do sell them, but if I didn't I would say they are the best, my 2 cents!!!!

I have the big fiskars rotary trimmer too. I love it. Used a 50% off at Michaels and it was just like 20$. Been ordering the rotary blades from addicted to scrapbooking when they have the 10$ off deal.... HTH
I have a Boston handle blade, old-fashioned paper cutter that I have used for almost 14 years now. It cuts perfectly every time and I could not live without it. I have the fiskars small one (hate it, it has never cut well) and bought the Fiskars Euro at Costco and it cuts well but bought it mostly for the scoring. Now I can not find the scoring blade for it.
I like the guilotine style cutter vs. the rotary for I get sharp, straight lines every time and I never have to replace the parts. I will be very depressed when it finally breaks down. It is 12 x 12 and we are attached at the hips.
Any one else out there that uses a plain old paper cutter like this?
I have the same problem with the fiskars too, but if you lean the cutter down one side of the ruler it works better. I need to get a replacement cutter but that means less money for stamps... so it isn't at the top of my wish list!
