Default Prismacolor Gamsol/Baby Oil ?

I want to try the coloring technique of using Prismacolor pencils with Gamsol or Baby Oil. Is one better than the other or do you basically get the same results? Also, can I stamp my image on regular smooth cardstock or do I need to use watercoloring paper? Just need some info to get me started!

Thanks Bunches!

Some use goo gone too. I've only used the gamsol and like it...doesn't seem to leave an oily residue or anything like that on my paper/project. ;)

If you don't have any health issues that would keep you from using mineral spirits, I would recommend them. I use odorless mineral spirits (this product is available under a variety of brand names like gamsol, turpenoid, etc.). Odorless mineral spirits are not going to leave a greasy residue like baby oil might if you are not very careful in your application.

If you do have respiratory issues, are pregnant, or just don't want to inhale fumes, there are products like Turpenoid Natural that are non-toxic.

Of course, there are always the goo gone and baby oil options, as well.

As far as paper goes, I would recommend a high quality smooth finish cardstock. I have not used mineral spirits or oil on watercolor paper, but my guess is that it would be absorbed by the paper and possibly wicked out into the area surrounding where you are applying it. I'm sure others can comment on how watercolor paper reacts with these products.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the info. I have some nice cardstock so I will try working on that. I just didn't know if the color would "move" on the cardstock as opposed to the watercolor paper. I would much rather use the cardstock.

I have only used baby oil and have never had a problem with it. I use Georgia Pacific cs from Wally World and it works great. Now I have never tried the gamsol, so I don't know if it is better, but I like the baby oil and it is certainly easy to find.

I too use the GP cardstock from Wal-mart (you can also get it even cheaper at Sam's) and baby oil. I tend to be sensitive to chemicals so I have tried anything other than the baby oil. IMO it works great. If you plan ahead, and let whatever you color dry overnight, the oil is absorbed in and doesn't leave it feeling oily or anything.

I've used odorless mineral spirits on water color paper and it worked fine. When I colored on it with my Prismacolors, it was hard to get every area completely colored in because of the texture of the paper but the mineral spirits spread the color evenly.

I have used gamsol and baby oil on Georgia Pacific 110lb paper from Walmart. I decided to stick with baby oil, I just don't like the thought of fumes. Baby oil works fine for me.

I use gamsol - but since I live in Canada - Georgia Pacific was not avialable to me - at least not in that weight - but Stampin Up's Whisper White works really well. Having good stumps - made in Taiwan plus having the right paper makes a big difference. I"ve never tried googone or baby oil.

I tried odorless mineral spirits and baby oil and I am still using baby oil with my Prismacolor pencils. The OMS scared me since it is flammable. My images are not oily either. I placed a small square of felt on the bottom of an old small Tupperware container. I add a few drops of baby oil to the felt and I dab my blending stump onto the felt as needed to blend the colors. It works well for me! And when I am done, I just cover it and it is ready to use for next time.

I started out using Gamsol but I tried Goo Gone after reading a few posts on SCS and I prefer Goo Gone; it's cheaper, it doesn't evaporate, and it stays wet longer allowing for better blending.

My $.02.

Like Pamela,Jenn,Ellie and others, I use Georgia Pacific CS and baby oil. I have great results with it. I used Goo Gone to see whether it would give the smae results. It is ok but I will stick with the baby oil. I read on another thread that someone had used the baby oil cream, I don't remember what her results were. I use the "old fashioned" oil. ( the cheap Wally kind small 50cent sample.) I say use what works for you and gives you the results that you desire and "don't sweat it" JUST have fun with it............

I also use baby oil and the GP cs. This weekend I used a super smooth card stock and I found the stamping ink (Versafine) smeared. I than went back to theGP cs and I got great results.

You can use regular cardstock. I love using Prismacolors and Gamsol. It's amazing how smooth it looks when I'm done.
