Hi! I am totally new to colored pencils and could use some guidance in just figuring out where to start. I need to learn about brands, what baby oil, OMS, gamesol etc are for and beginning coloring. I have some Copics but prefer watercoloring currently. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

A few years ago I took several wonderful classes in coloring with Prismacolor pencils, gamsol, etc. at the Inkspot in Kirkwood. Unfortunately, I heard they just closed. Maybe some other small rubber stamp store in the St. Louis area has decided to offer these classes. The classes really hooked me onto this medium. Best of luck.

the Ink Spot closed? Oh no! I was only in there a couple of times when I visited St. Louis but I loved that store.

Yes, I just tried to go to The Ink Spot a few weeks ago, and they are gone. Only the chain stores are left, with the exception of the local scrapbook store. They are looking to add to their rubber stamp stock.

Yes, Julie sold Inkspot and has retired. I sure miss it too. There is a fairly new stamp store in Kimmswick that carries a nice selection. I believe it is called the Stamp Shack. I know it is closed on Mondays. That day I'm usually free. Lol

That's great. Hope you got a good price. I have been "fiddling"with Prismas for a couple of years but am actually going to a class on Wednesday night. It's the first time I have seen a class being run for them so keen to learn a little more.

Yes, the store is For Keepsake; it is on Lemay Ferry in South County.
They are adding to their stamp lines. They just got in Penny Black and Our Daily Bread Designs. I have requested a few other brands. They also carry a lot of Spellbinder "stuff".

The one in Kimmswick is called STAMP PAD. It is 6054 Front street.
For Keeps Sake is having a good sale going on. I'm afraid to walk in!

Yes, I was there both yesterday and today (sigh). I only live about 2 miles away, and that can be either good or bad! LOL! They just posted on their blog that they have new products out. They are now starting to carry masks-they just put out new Crafter's Workshop stock- and they just put on the ODBD stamps.

I struggle with pencil coloring and any successes take hours. I had the luxury of an artist friend showing me a few tricks. The first is that Prismas are now made in Mexico which is why they break all the time no matter how careful you are even though they blend well. I've tried other brands and love all of them much better and not one single one broke while sharpening. Secondly she never uses gamsol or mineral spirits. She blended simply by layering color and it does work but is time consuming. The more pencil you lay down the better it blends working slowly with light colors first. On a snowman for example she colored the entire snowman in white for the first layer. Other brands such as Caran d'Arch are fabulous and blend easier with less layers. Again I still struggle but her helpful hints did make it a bit easier although not fast.

I looked at my video and I want to redo it... it's more like me talking to myself while I color rather than being really instructional, and it needed to be zoomed in more so you can see what the blending is doing. *sigh*

I know exactly what you mean. I have a major immune issue. I can not absorb b12, D, or Iron. I need to do B12 shots twice a month, Iron infusions and on occasion, transfusions. To top that off I also have Fibromyalgia. I feel like I'm lazy a lot but it truly is just exhaustion. Do you take the shots? I wish I felt that rush everyone talks about when they get the shot - I've never ever felt it. The iron infusions tho will give me tons of energy but no strength to do anything with it. I love when someone says "just take a pill, that will help" uhm... no, not at all actually.

Did youget the new colors? If so, where?

I thought this video was very helpful, at least for a beginner. I appreciated it, Dina.
I keep waffling back and forth between Prismacolors and Inktense Watercolor pencils. Today I browsed at Dick Blick's and I think I came to the conclusion that I need both! I am thinking 24 Prismas and 48 ( I think that is the number) Inktense.

For me its just the b12, but the shots cause insomnia! Its been going on for so long they're thinking chronic fatigue. My partner has fibromyalgia but the pain makes it hard to see my struggles.

Got my pencils off EbayAU. Got a chance to play with them today briefly and i love them.

Hi Ladies! Any recommendations on what kind of pencil sharpener to use for Prismas? I have seen a couple of tutorials about eletric sharpeners not being good for the color core??

Thanks!

Gail I have used a ton of sharpeners! Prismacolor makes one and if you are lucky enough to get a good one you'll never need another one. they are cheap about $4.00.
I use mine or the small silver metal one. I had a great electric one that died and they don't make it any more! It is a monumental task to find a good one. I do think it is a personal thing.

I'm working on that video today! I have all the video part done, just working on voiced-over instructions. I decided it was better to just color, and then figure out the theory afterwards. Some of it is a little out of order (didn't think that through when I was actually coloring), but it's coming together well. Just letting you know! I'm about 1/4 of the way done... it takes me forever to record stuff because it has to be just right...! Hopefully it will be helpful.

Can't wait Dina! I am ready to go with a new aqua painter and watercolor paper. Anxiously awaiting my Prismacolors and my Inktense pencils-feel like a kid at Christmas...

Thanks for the tutorial Dini - I learned alot from it. I didn't realise you could use an alcohol blender pen too! I am so rusty with the Magic Coloured Pencil technique as I have been mainly using watercolour pencils in recent times - about a year. I guess it's like anything: you stop doing it and you get out of practice and the first time you do it again, your efforts can be quite disappointing. Will have to practice and practice again till I feel more comfortable and the process isn't frustrating me so much. I am amazed at how I've forgotten what colours I used to use for particular things like skin. I do use a mix of Prismacolor and Derwent Coloursoft + Koh-i-noors as some colours in my Prismas don't blend out as well as I would like and find my Derwents and Koh-i-noors work really well for me. I seem to be able to use my Derwents and Koh-i-noors successfully on a greater range of cardstock too compared to my Prismas. Anyway, I should stop talking and start colouring Thanks again for the video Dini

Thank you Dina for the very helpful tutorial on blending, my pencils will be getting off the shelf for awhile. I find coloring so peaceful for the mind.

Thanks so much for the blending video, Dina! Lots of info packed in there!I think I will have to have my computer sitting next to me when I break out the colored pencils for the first time. You make it look so easy but I am sure I will have the "now what do I do? feeling once I sit down to actually USE the Prismas!

Great video Dina thank you! We moved and it takes me forever to get back into doing crafty stuff after a move but I am finally moving towards that and this is a great help. Seeing the various blending mediums on the same stamp is great.
