I am such a newbie with the pencils. In order to intensify the color you need to keep adding layers of color with the pencils, do you blend with the om with each layer? Oh there are sooooo many pretty colors in my new set. They are such vibrant colors. Just beautiful.

Ooh, new pencils, pretty colors... That makes me want to go and smell mine again. *purr*

You can blend with each layer if you're using OMS. I tend to blend less with each additional layer... With the first layers you want to build a solid color base. As you add layers of color, you want to add details and concentrate your shading. Hope that makes sense... I had too much sugar today!

Thanks Dina. Yes it makes sense and any pointers I can get from you is great. I don't think I have ever seen anyone color with the Prismas like you do. Your work is just astounding. You are a true artist and I am in awe when I see your work. I am very comfortable with the Copics doing my shading and blending but it will take me awhile to get used to the pencils. I have been playing and it's so much fun. I can sit and color in my room and listen to the radio and it's so peaceful. It's such a stress reliever.

The theory of shading is the same with both mediums but the techniques are so different - I have been working with markers more lately and when I go back to pencils it's a bit of an adjustment. Thanks for your kind words. I just love coloring, no matter what I'm using.

I am so happy to see so many pencil fans out there. I have a full Pampered Chef spinning organizer full. Real Life fun fact: My learning to use pencils for coloring stamped images came in handy for my college drawing classes - I already had a head start in shading and layering.
When layered stamps became popular, my pencils gathered a bit of dust, but with digi stamps and outline stamps coming back in favor...those pencils are back out again.
I found a great tiny metal pencil sharpener somewhere, super sharp and use it to hand sharpen my pencils. I'm so protective...NO ONE is allowed to touch my Prismacolor pencils! lol

Silly Filly,
I'm so glad you are enjoying your pencils! I got some more new pencils while in Denver over Christmas. They had the most amazing art supply store! I had a list of what colors I wanted and my husband even helped me find them. I would have loved to spend more time in the store, but he's so NOT a shopper, so I didn't press my luck

Dina, I did buy more blues and you are right, I love the muted turq.!

I got some Derwent Metallics..haven't tried them out yet..anyone have any tips? Do they blend with OMS w/o losing the glittery look?

Oh SC Magnolia..I envy you..I so miss the days of wandering aorund the art supply store..the smells..and boy things just sure get brighter in one huh ? LOL I haven't been in one in about 3 years..when we lived in Knoxville I had a Jerry's Artarama 15 mins from my house..LOVE..( let us not talk about how the Joannes and Mike's and AC Moore were 20 mins from there..LOL)...now I have to buy on line..it sure saves me a lot of money though LOL If I can't smell the paper and touch the pastels then I am not so tempted HAHA

Now I must play with all these new colors.... so I NEED to buy a few new stamps. Because ...well I need a different type of stamp. Yeah that's the reason I need to buy MORE! lol

I'd like to get a few more stamps especially suited to coloring with my Prismas. I'm looking at a barn, covered bridge, and farm bell by Gary Robertson (Impression Obsession) and some Northwoods images too. It is so hard to decide!! If I were still working I'd have more money, but then I wouldn't have time to stamp! argh

Can anyone suggest some You Tube tutorials for me or even a book perhaps? How do you highlight black? With gray on top of it?

Inkin One, that book looks good.

I have had this one for years: Stamp in Color

Silly Filly, I don't have the talent that Dini or Cerridwen, but I read and took notes then wrote a tutorial on my blog. I have links to tutorials and videos done by people who are much more knowledgeable than I am. Maybe it would be of some help to you.

Can I just say...i am in love with the 18 new Prisma colors!! I ordered them from Dick Blick and got them yesterday. I also ordered a 72 pencil set of Dick Blick Studio pencils and a few Caran d'Ache browns just to try them. Haven't seriously played with them yet - only added them to my palette sheets but they will fill in some gaps for me. The Blicks aren't quite as creamy as my beloved Prismas, but for the price are very nice pencils. Kinda surprised by the Caran d' Aches. I don't like them nearly as much as the Prismas for the price. Now to go play!!!

SC I have been on your blog and looked at your tutorial. It's very helpful. I didn't know Dina had a tutorial on the pencils. Just so new at it I need help. So many people say the Copics are hard but I picked up on them like it was second nature.

Thanks for the info ladies. I'm gonna look at that book too.

Anyone have a favorite red pencil? I have a couple but it seems I can never get that deep red I want. Oh and I would like a nice "vintage" looking red too...

Y'all know what we need? A gallery for cards done with Prismas! Silly Filly and I have been talking to each other about images so that got me looking at company galleries which is very helpful to me, because I can see how they stamp before buying and I get great examples of light and shading. But most are done with Copics.... which are gorgeous, but I would love to see Prisma examples.

What about you, would you like to see a gallery of Prisma cards? Can we do that?

If we add Prismacolor as a keyword when we post to the gallery, all those cards will come up in a search together.

Crimson and Tuscan are what I have been using. I think I may order a couple of open stock reds to see if I can find a few more hues and values of them. I LOVE Tuscan red thoguh. I seem to go through those more than any other color..

HMM..do you all have certain colors you use up quicker? I know I agree with Dini about getting "sets" of pencils then filling in where you need to. I seem to have replaced certain colors more than others..like for black, I use layers of indigo, dark green, tuscan red and finally a light layer of black ( OMSing each layer). It makes a deep black but isn't flat. I have a fairy I am working on and use that for the back ground...( when done I will post to my blog)..Anyway just wondering what everyone elses "go-to" colors were.

I'm looking forward to seeing your fairy, I bet she's lovely

Do you find that certain pencils give better coverage? I have been using my Polychroms more to have better color variety and I have noticed they seem to lay down a thicker color.. Less white left under after blending if that makes sense? Are these the best for that or is there an even better pencil? I like the thicker coverage as it seem to save the pencils!..not as many layers needed. They don't sharpen to as fine of a point as my Prismas do so that is one tiny draw back for me. I still love my prismas but I am enjoying this variety as well.

Here is another one. I have some metallics..both Prisma and Derwent. How the heck do you use them? Do you just highlight with them or will they still have that glittery look after blended?

I have been reading that the Prisma Pencils now made in Mexico are a little more waxy and hard to blend and therefore switching to an alternative brand. I have been using Prisma Pencils and have been happy with the results although my set is older and all pencils are made in USA. I am fearful to purchase a product that will disappoint. Can you give me any insight to this matter?

Polychromos pencils are oil based, whereas Prismacolor pencils are wax based - so the coverage will be a bit different - you'll also notice that the oil pencils have less breakage issues and the leads tend to stay sharp longer. It comes down to your own preference... they are different kinds of pencils, so it's hard to say which is better - each has its place. Know what I mean?

As far as the Prismacolor pencils produced in Mexico... if you dig back through earlier pages in this post you'll find some discussion on this topic... Prismacolor says there has been no formula change, and they stand behind their product, and will happily replace any pencils or product you find to be unacceptable. I have not had any problem with newer pencils not blending. I didn't see any difference in the pencils except maybe a very slight difference in diameter.

I agree FWIW. I have some older sets..the ones made in US..and a couple of newer open stock pencils that I have had to replace. I haven't had any trouble blending the new ones either. I did notice a small difference in size as Dini said above..but not enough to really bring attention to. Sanford does stand behind their product..I had an issue with a couple of them breaking every time I sharpened them. I thought at first it was my sharpener( electric.) The breakage was so bad I was taking my sharpener apart several times a day to get out the broken pieces of "lead". I started using a hand sharpener..Prismacolors own sharpener at that. Didn't help. I contacted customer service and they replaced ALL the pencils I had ordered and sent a new hand held sharpener. I didn't even have to send them the old ones either. The new ones were mailed in thick bubble wrap..and I never had an issue with them at all. Prismas are my favortie..I do love my Polychromes too...but I adore my Prismas..LOL

Hi all!

I haven't popped in here for ages! I need to keep up to date! I didn't even know there were new Prisma colors out! Yikes, I need to get those!

I have a question about replacing pencils, I've been using the same set for about 3 years and haven't run out of one color yet and I color a lot. It seems like others are replacing them often. Any guesses?

Also, I am getting annoyed with my stumps not always blending, where can I buy the best in your experience?

Thanks,

Kathy

I don't think there is any rhyme or reason to some people needing to replace pencils more often. Can be something as simple as using different sharpeners..or how often they use certain colors. I use them for larger scale drawings as well as stamped images so that eats them up pretty quick.
As far as for stumps I like these..and that is where I order them as well.

I went back and looked at some of your Prisma work. Although I like the coloring on this image, I think I like your Prisma stuff better. Is it because the Prisma allows you to build more depth of color? I love, love the way you are able to show light in your Prisma work... I have tried and tried and I can NOT do that.

Organization question here...I have A LOT of pencils...between the colored pencils and water colors and Inktense..I have them in their original tins( excpet for my Derwent wc's..they are in a mug on my desk)...I find this to be cumbersome ( using the tins), but I am not sure what else to use. Portability isn't really a huge issue for me right now, as I keep them at my desk. ( I am ordering a couple of those cases from Blicks to use when traveling this summer)...anyway...do you keep yours in their tins..or do you have something to organize them?

i have one of those plastic storage drawer thingies and i keep each kind in it's own drawer but that is as organized as i can get. i have way too many to keep them out anywhere. this way i just grab the drawer that has the ones i want to use & dig!
