I was thinking about you today! I found my handout and books I used a few years when I was learning how to use them. I decided I STILL have room for improvement, so after typing with you, I began reading my stuff again and some lights went on that must have been out before! lol I'm understanding a few things better... just what I felt was missing in my efforts.

I didn't really like gamsol as well as the prisma blender pencil. I'm going to try it again, and the baby oil too.

I can't copy the handouts (copyrighted), but I did write a summary of them all, if you are interested, I can send it to you.

Ha! The one time I didn't write them down...! I think it's this:

Permanent Red (lightfast line)
Crimson Lake
Black Raspberry

...blended with the Colorless Blender.

I will need to do a chart for them though (ie: wet v. dry) as the Inktense pencils look so different once water is added. Next I will experiment with adding OMS (my understanding is that you can use OMS with them) and see what happens - will be interesting to see how vibrant they are with OMS. {happy sigh} - it's so fun to play with pencils

WOW~~that almost makes me want to buy some WC pencils, that is bee-utiful!

BUT i have been coloring with the polycolors and boy oh boy do i love them! the colors are just so vibrant and the color goes on so smooth and blendy! i am still using PTI paper. here are some things i have done recently - more info is on my blog if you want to check it out:

new release from SCACD

for the Make It Crafty celebration - you can find some prize opportunities on my blog from MiC too

this was for the last Through the Craft Room Door mag challenge - the full project is in the current issue. the challenge right now is fairytale themed

another SCACD release

on the Make it Crafty I tried PTI's rustic cardstock and i didn't like it - i couldn't get enough layers to get the depth of color i wanted.

can't figure out why the pics are so big - sorry!
Marti, I follow your blog, so I've seen these and they're just incredible! I have not dropped out of class, just had grandchildren it seems FOREVER! I'm finally getting back into the swing of things, and need to upload that technique of stamping on dark paper and then coloring w/pencils!

Anybody that gets emails from michaels with coupons... there is a 45% entire purchase of fine art supplies, including pencils, artist paints, pastels and markers. As well as a 40% off any regular priced item... my michaels lets me use them both. Just a quick tip. Good for 08/21-08/27.

Talking

Fionna51 found the updated Debbie Gimbel Prismacolor booklet.

Check out this thread:
ISO Colored Pencil Book by Debbie Gimbel

I have an older booklet she did on Color theory and it helped me a lot when I was learning how to use prismacolors.

Some of you were talking about what black ink you use to stamp with and what color paper. I can't remember what class I took.. might have been one of Debbie's or River City Rubber Works maybe (I'm talking 10 years ago). Anyway, they taught us to stamp in brown ink rather than black, because they said black gives an outlined kind of cartoonish look. They showed how brown allowed you to finish off the deepest shadows in black or dark sepia and get wonder three- dimensional effects. They also showed how a neutral colored cardstock like a tan shade adds to the composition and provides contrast for the lighter colors of pencil that a white background can't.

Now, that being said... do I do it? Yes on the tan cardstock, but I haven't found a brown ink pad color that is dark enough. (or maybe I'm just not good enough with the color). There are no longer any local stamp stores in my area, and Hobby Lobby has limited supplies. I don't want to mail order without seeing the color first. Now that I'm back into stamping again, I will work on this. If anyone has had success with a good dark brown, please let me know.

Just noticed these charts on the TSG blog, in case someone might prefer this format...

There She Goes Clear Stamps: Wednesday Trends- Jessica

@sc magnolia -- My darkest brown ink pads are Ranger's Adirondack Espresso and Color Box Fluid Chalk Dark Brown.

Marti, did I tell you I got a (slightly used) set of 120 of the Polychromos on ebay -- in a Global leather case -- for $66? Those are waiting for me in Florida so I'll get them in December... I'm thinking I will leave my Prismas here, and just use those while we're in the States - save room in my luggage.

I don't have any here, just Polycolors (36). I was really excited to get them in the case already. Those are so great for road trips.

Dini,
Thanks for the brown ink pad colors, and I love the pencil chart, itís better than the one I made

When I Googled Polychromos to see what they were, I found the best article! This may be another of those Ďblonde momentsí but I didnít know that Prismacolors were subject to internal breakage if they bang around.... the lead can break inside the wood and when when you sharpen it, the point falls off in the sharpener. Sometimes that happens repeatedly till your brand new pencil is only two inches long by the time it has a solid point. This has happened to me many times! I thought it was the way I was sharpening them, so I have 3 different pencil sharpeners! Geeze! The article also mentioned the engineering of the Prismacolor Colored Pencil Sharpener which makes it extra gentle on soft colored pencils. Thatís good to know cause thatís one of the three I have. lol

Dini, I just checked my stash and the browns I have are
Memories: brown, chesnut
Ancient Page: sienna

Sooooo either the whole brown thing just doesn't work for me, OR maybe expresso is darker than chesnut. I'll have to check it out.

Question

Hi
I have been stalking this thread for a while and just got my set of prismacolours. I would love any tips on what the best skincolour combos are.
I had a quick play on some copy paper when they arrived (you can see it HERE ) I am not happy with the amount of powder debris I got but I think that might be my technique as I have always used copics up till now, or the crappy paper.
So anyway back to the point.... any fave skin combos out there?

Hi Lou! You might try coloring with a lighter hand to lessen the crumbling some. I think I tend toward light peach and nectar for skin.

Lou, you did a lovely job with those new pencils. I was taught to use 927 for skin color and 928 for cheeks. The debris is all that wax which is what makes them blendable. Sometimes it litters my background, so I stipple over the bg with a very light blue dye ink.

I was wondering if anyone has a chart that shows what prismacolor pencils work for the new stampin-up in-colors for 2011-2013?

I just finished making a new blank one so you can fill in the colors you have, but the other colors are all listed. You can find it on my blog.

I also posted some tips and techniques from various artists.

I can't believe how I never really USED the color wheel before. Well yes I can, cause I didn't know how! lol And did you know that those pencils are so fragile that if they are dropped, the lead can easily brake inside the wood..... that's why some pencils seem to use up so quickly, the lead just falls out, so you sharpen and another piece falls out, and you sharpen again etc. Now I will be more careful with my pencils, and watch where I buy them too. Dick Blick is just as cheap as Hobby Lobby with coupons, and they pack very carefully for shipping.

Dini, I love yours too. While mine is blank to color in with the colors you have, yours has the the colors already colored in. That's great because I can see what colors look like that I need to buy.

If anyone is just getting started with these wonderful pencils, Nicole Heady, PTI, had a great little quicky tutorial on her Make It Monday series this week:

{capture the moment}: Make It Monday #30: Colored Pencils

I really like that video, thanks so much for sharing

Now I have questions
What is that adhesive mat she was talking about? Do any of you use it?
Do color one section, blend, the color the next section OR do you color the whole thing, then blend the whole thing?

I gotta go find more videos!! I love watching other people do things. I can't take classes where I live, there aren't any! When we had a local stamp store, I WAS one of the teachers. I want to learn new things too Wish we still had a store. I went to a nearby large city today and visited their Michaels. OMG y'all would have thought I was so funny. I felt like a country bumpkin goin' to the big city. There was so much STUFF in that store!! WOW wayyyyy more than the itty bitty Hobby Lobby in my small town. I just kept walking around in a daze thinking, "ohhhhhh ahhhhhh,." I saw a lot of products that I've seen people mention on SCS but wasn't quite sure what they were. So much stuff With the sale, I got a few more pencils for $1.01 which is a pretty good deal, but ya know what? Dick Blick sells them all the time for 88 cents a piece.

I think the mat she was using was a piece cut from a Cricut sticky mat. It is adhesive, but you can peel up the cardstock. I don't think you would have to use that, but it might be convenient to use a little repositional adhesive to keep your image from moving around while you are coloring.

I'd never thought about sticking my images to something while coloring until I saw the video. I just hold them in place with my left hand while I'm coloring.
