Here's what I got done this afternoon, a little at a time, with the Polycolors... they are different to work with, and so nice! The pencils are oil-based, so there's no waxy sheen - they blended well with each other, but could layer well too - easy to add texture as well.

Very nice Dina!

Thought I would post a couple non-stamp drawings I did with the Derwent Studio Pencils. A couple of Prismas and Graphitints were thrown in too. These were all done in my cheap sketchbook on Spring Break.

oh dini how are the oil based ones - second on my list to buy after the inktense.

and yes oh how i adore a new pack of pencils - i will admit when i first opened them i just stared for a few minutes at each layer...

the little bunnies are from Paper Shelter - lots of super cute digis!

here they are finished and sitting in little piles of deeLISH Elements Earth Textures (by Art Institute Glitter) - that is what I am reviewing for the Craft Critique article.

Love these bunnies Marti, I am DYING to take that class, but I have to get rid of company first! (they're draining the checkbook, AARRGGHH!) I have the complete set of Prismas, but wanting to get something different. I also have the Derwent Studios~~
Dini, your work is so inspiring! Beautiful! I'm working on A robertson's victorian now from IO.
Tim, you completely crack me up! I love, love love those drawings! You are so talented.
Has anyone tried the FC Aquarelles?? I bought a few today 2 Hobby Lobby, but they must be waaaay over my head, because I could not do a thing with them! If someone has a suggestion, fire away!
Finally, I'm just going to put my .02 in~~I started out w/pencils way back when, and decided to jump on the Copic bandwagon for a bit. I'm reaquainting myself w/pencils again, and realizing why I had a love affair with them in the 1st place, LOL! They are so versatile, inexpensive, and FUN!...........just sayin'!

Hmmm, I tried them again last night, but I'm waaaaay out of my league, these are Dini pencils, hahaha!
I think I am headed over to Dick Blick and pick up some Polychromos~~I used my Prisma's this morning for a geranium, but itching to get something else! BTW, what do you use for the blending? I've been using the blender pencil from Pirsma, but the book I'm reading now suggests a Scharff moon brush, and that was not available @ DB. I really like the Derwent Colorsofts as well, but I am afraid I will do what you did, and order the entire set, hahaha!

i have switched over to the derwent blender pencil - it comes in a set of two with two burnishing pencils as well. the blender pencils are awesome! better than prisma. got mine at DB. though most often i blend/burnish with my pencils as i go - especially the lightest one.

That bunny stamp... I got on a full sheet of stamps from www.addictedtorubberstamps.com called Current Critters... I found this link: Current Critters Unmounted Sheet which says 'out of stock'. Need me to stamp a few bunnies out for you? PM me if you want.

Thanks Angie! Next time I'll have more pencil-colored pieces in the gallery, I think. I loved coloring that House Mouse piece! Here's a close-up that I didn't put in the gallery.... gotta be careful if you blend reds with your finger... lots of smudges everywhere, especially with those waxy Prismas... so much pigment in the reds.

He's cute!

If I color anything with reds I try to color the rest first and the red last or I have smudges every where.

Hey gang! I think I must have fallen off the edge of the earth, except I took my pencils with me. I've been coloring like crazy and having a blast doing it. I'm so in love with my Inktense pencils that my Prismacolors are suffering for it! I had no idea I could be MORE addicted to pencils! I so love the vividness that the Inktense pencils give. Layering and coloring with them is almost a whole new experience.

This is one of my favorite cards lately. It's done entirely with Inktense pencils:

Dina - Saw the news! Congrats! You deserve to be dirty!

FYI, Jennifer Shultz of Deconstructing Jen has a WONDERFUL post on coloring skin and hair with Prismacolors.

deconstructing jen Prismacolor Skin/Hair Guide Book

She gives a great example of how to create a coloring journal too! Notice how, in addition to labeled swatches of all the colors used, she notes whether she likes the combo or not. GREAT POST and a great encouragement to all of us to start or add to a coloring journal!!!

Checked out her tutorials, they are terrific!! She explains everything so well and her wording is so "user friendly" even newbies feel encouraged to give her techniques a try. Thanks for sharing her site.

A coloring journal is a great idea! I ordered a sketch book for just that purpose with my latest Blick order. I only rarely do faces and hair, with most of my images being dragons or other critters. It doesn't mean that I don't have a set group of favorite color combos, though. I'm actually looking forward to having a single book of color, particularly now that I've branched out to Derwent Inktense and Graphitints.

it really is so helpful to keep track of color combos. i don't have a book but i do have a chart page i print out and use to keep track of color combos that work. saves SO much time when coloring to have a chart to refer to rather than sort of starting from scratch with each image or trying to remember the right colors. in addition to hair and skin colors i do it for leaves, chocolate, just to name a few

HI!

I just bought a 120 set of prismacolor pencils. I have a bunch of copics but wanted to try something different. I can't seem to get it to look right and it is really sad. I'm not going to give up just yet though.

I have PTI paper and am not sure if that is my issue, or my stumps, or if I'm just not using enough baby oil. *sigh*

Thanks!

I did just get them on Friday and after sharpening all of them, I really only got to color hair on one stamp. So I can't judge to harshly just yet. I keep reading about Dewerts now. I saw them but just figured prismas were the way to go. At least I know it isn't my paper. It's just a user error.

I have been using Faber Castell pencils (box of 60); but I am bored with so few colors. So, I am now watching Ebay to see if I can get a good deal.

One tip that was passed on to me was to use only stumps that were made in Taiwan because they just work much better. (don't know why). I use Gamsol (mineral spirits) and that works great for blending.

I like the tip about making a blending swatch book/journal. I think I will do that. Thanks for the tip.
