hi everyone!

i am hoping to get some ideas here from you all - i can't seem to settle on a paper i like for my prisma card coloring. i don't use OMS or anything, i prefer to layer and burnish so i need something that is NOT as smooth as most cardmaking cardstocks BUT i find the very toothy artist papers i used to use are a bit too much for the quick cardmaking i want to do (i put DOZENS of hours into my colored pencil paintings but not my card images). Patricia from Paper Temptress is sending me some samples of different papers she has. what do y'all use and what techniques do you use with it (OMS, no OMS...)

and here is my most recent card with a prisma image - this image is from one of the lessons in my online prisma class.

Great card! I use OMS with my Prismas and mostly seem to use Stampin Up Whisper White. I would love to be able to try the Gina K card that a lot use but you can't get it here in Australia it seems. I know that there is one from Walmart that a lot use too. I was interested in the Prisma classes online, where do you do that? I have often thought I would like to do some classes on Prismas.

i am teaching at Color Me Creative - my colored pencil 1 is up now and colored pencil 2 will be up next month.

so far i have been using gina K, PTI and Cryogen (because that's what i had on hand for my Copics.) they work fine when i use OMS for blending but not as well when i use other techniques. The PTI is ok but i would like something with a rougher texture.

Thumbs up SO EXCITED!!!

My mom bought me the 72 set of Dick Blick Artists' colored pencils as a treat for me. They came yesterday, (before I had to go to work, ugh! Go figure, lol) so I stayed up until 4:30 in the morning making a color chart for them with and without OMS (I use Gamsol). They are so awesome!! I understand now when they talk about the color pigmentation for pencils, it all makes sense!!

I had been using Rose Art and Crayola and they worked really well, but this is a whole new level of awesome! I am so excited I just had to share!!

Happy Stamping and Coloring!!

Great card, beautiful coloring! I used to use OMS, but layer now, and like it better. I've been using the Bristol watercolor, and like it a lot, but Cryogen is also great. I've used GinaK as well, but that was when I was blending w/OMS. Finally, I've tried the Georgia Pacific from Walmart, and it blends well, but I did some digi's and the ink ran, so I am pretty careful now!~~I think it is just like everything else, you have to keep trying until you get the right fit. I went through three or four when I started copics, and finally settled on Cryogen. Good luck!

Default Some sample watercolour pencil images

The weather was nice enough to take some photos of what I have been playing with. All the images are by Penny Black and they are coloured with Faber Castell watercolour pencils - just ones I picked up from a local store which - they aren't fancy but I really like them. {sigh} wish they made a bigger pack than 48...... Anyway, onto to my images which I have attached (they are NOT uploaded to my Gallery).......

The cat with the daffodils is my first try.

The cat with the mouse is my 2nd, and this time I played a little bit with adding some texture to the mouse's coat by colouring the pencil on a scrap piece of watercolour paper, adding some water with my brush, then touching the brush lightly on the paper towel so much of the water soaks off but still leaves the colour, then touched the mouse with little "dabbing" strokes.

The third image is the teddy bear which I coloured totally by adding dabbing strokes in different shades of brown to get some woolly texture on the bear. I still need to finish the butterflies and the surrounds of the image (eg: sky, ground), but thought it was worth showing so you could see what fun I was having last night.

Hope you like them

Jo, those are awesome! I'm gonna have to get my watercolors out and try messing with them again - but I'm sure they won't look as nice as yours.

Have you tried the PTI Rustic White cardstock? I like then when I'm blending straight pencil to pencil. No OMS. It's got a nice tooth without being too rough. I'd say it falls somewhere between Georgia Pacific from Walmart and Watercolor paper.

Jo, those pictures are outstanding! I think I might have to buy some PB stamps, hahaha! You're coloring is to die for! Do I have to take up water coloring now, Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll try the PTI as well, the watercolor definitely has "tooth" but I can be a bit heavy handed sometimes! I'm attaching a photo of something I did this week, the light one I auto corrected, and the colors are not accurate, but the brown one is good (albeit dark!)
BTW, cerridwen3301, you're being waaaaay too modest! I checked out your blog and your pictures look like photographs! If you haven't been over there everyone, run Forrest, run! No wonder you're giving classes on pencil work! When are you coming out with your first book, LOL! You really need to post some pictures!

Thanks everyone for your compliments - I really appreciate them!

I used 2 different weights by Eraldo di Paolo that come in pads - an A4 pad and an A5. One is certainly more creamy in colour than the other which is very evident in the photos.

One is 300 gsm medium tooth Watercolour pad - I think about 140lb with your imperial measurements. It doesn't say whether it is hot or cold pressed but by the feel of it, it is cold-pressed.

The other is a 225gsm Field pad of Watercolour paper which has a smooth texture (again it doesn't say whether it is hot or cold pressed - I think it feels like hot-pressed given that it is so smooth).

The only snag I have hit with my watercolouring is getting an ink that doesn't bleed once you add water. I have Memento Tuxedo black and Stazon Jet black - the Memento bleeds (I ever tried heat-setting it to see if it made a difference but it still bled . The Stazon is great except that often I will not get all of the fine detail of the image when I stamp which means I have to go back later and draw in the lines with a waterproof black pen. Not a big deal - nevertheless, it annoys me. Any recommendations on ink choice (other than Stazon)? BTW, I don't have access to SU products - it would have to be ink readily available from craft stores.

I use Versafine inks for watercoloring... occasionally Colorbox Fluid Chalk.

I managed to get my mitts on Versafine Onyx black and it works - yay - no more smeared images! Thanks Dini

And thanks to the other suggestions. Good to know there is more than one brand that works.

I'm glad they last a long time. I have never seen a reinker for them. Do they make a reinker for the Versafine pads?

hi everyone!

i recently got some Lilly of the Valley stamps and LOVE them. colored this one yesterday for my neighbor's little girl - my daughter picked the colors!

*ETA: forgot to mention i used the Derwent Blending Pencil set i just got for the first time. it comes with blender pencils and burnishing pencils. the burnishing one is hard and more similar to the prisma colorless blender and the derwent blending pencil is much softer and really does a nice job of blending - it may become my new favorite method.....

Thanks Dana! So glad you like it!

Been on vacation in Tampa this week!! I did a lot of coloring which was nice and relaxing. I'll have to post some of the stuff I did.

Awesome work Jo!! I'd love to be able to do WC like that.

On paper selection I haven't heard Stonehenge mentioned yet I don't think. It's good for lots of layers. I don't like it too much personally but others swear by it and some swear at it.

I'm going to give a plug to Dina for plugging Hambo on her blog. A Mime is a Terrible Thing to Waste Check out her coloring! The idea of doing a rubbing for the street texture is Awesome!

Default Pencil Clearance!!

I was in Michael's today and they had the 32 pack of Derwent Studio colored pencils on clearance for $24!!!! Normally $69. I was just on Ebay looking for some too. I went to another Michael's and they weren't marked down but they did a price check and they were $24 too!! So now I have 3 tins.

I bought a 12 pack of Derwent Studio pencils on Ebay awhile back and really used them for the first time on vacation last week and I really like them. A lot harder then Prismacolors but I like that.

Hope ya'll have them on clearance too! I've been looking to buy them open stock but only one place online that I know of had them.

Prismacolor Chatter - Splitcoaststampers.com

These are Michael's coupons which start Sunday and there's a 40% off for pencils. Hope the link works.

Well that is not what I cut and pasted! I'll try it again.

Thanks Jogry for your compliments

I finally finished a card with the first image that I watercoloured with my watercolour pencils, so thought I would show it here if that's OK: A host of golden daffodils

I have been colouring images all week - it's so relaxing - and having fun experimenting with different ways of using them and trying different types of watercolour paper eg: weights, hot & cold pressed and the different textures that they all have. Heavenly......
