What one could do as a temporary solution for storage of their pencils is find a container and use empty toilet paper rolls or cut empty paper towel rolls in half and put them into a container. Of course, you would have to "doll" up the rolls first! Kinda of like Mr. Hambos but for "just until" you find the perfect set-up. Whata think??

That is a good idea for storage. Here is another idea that comes from Jacki with a blog called The Card Castle. I thought it was a clever use of one of the totes I see frequently in craft stores it would be portable in a home setting. http://www.flickr.com/photos/joyfulh...7602526114923/

I finally found a pencil storage item at Home Goods yesterday...it was on clearance for $18. I'm going to have to spray paint it black, but wanted to try it out first. It works great! Plus the pencils only used up 1/2 of the compartments, so I store all my other tools in there, too! I even have 3 compartments empty right now.

ETA: oops, forgot to rotate the picture first. But you get the idea. Plus, did I mention it SPINS?!?!
Mtgchic: Saw on the news tonight about the bad weather in B'ham. I hope you didn't have any damage at your house!

That is a good idea...knowing Jacki it HAD to be purple...lol.

The toilet paper rolls is a good idea. I use them to store my Zara Spooks (a fishing lure with lots of hooks) in my little fishing pack.

I have a ? about the shading of leaves on flowers...what colors do you usually use?
Seems that I don't ever get the leaves quite right and would like some suggestions.
Thanks so much in advance for your advice!!!

Mine changes from image to image. I do find myself using a lot of Olive Green and Kelp Green, though.

Be careful when you buy them, if they have been dropped it will break the lead inside and they will never sharpen properly. Always inspect the pencils before you buy them.
I had one drop once and the pencil is messed up to say the least!
is there a good way to check them out?
i have had trouble when i go to sharpen a new one for the first time.irks me to no end!

I was coloring yesterday and when I went to sharpen some pencils, they kept breaking. So I did a search and Gina K Designs had some answers on that subject. Some leads are broken and sometimes too much pressure when sharpening causes them to break. HTH
i just heard to always hold them & sharpen them vertically only?
who knew!

I made the plunge tonight and bought myself a set of 120 on ebay for BIN price of $54.95 (this comes with 2 art stix and a sharpener). I was outbid on one earlier but it was only for 120 pencils (no extras) so I made a better deal with the one I ended up buying. I bought the other accessories (sanding block, stumps, colorless blending pencil, set of 12 colored pencils of the new colors) on Dick Blick since they are offering a $5.95 shipping promo until April 14 (otherwise shipping goes up to $13 via Fed-ex).

I will probably be using the baby oil method per Diane's (djuseless) tutorial since I have little kids at home and I already have a bottle that I found.

V: That is a great idea with baby jars (I saved some for some reason)...

Thanks again ladies...I am sure I will be back with more questions as soon as I get to playing with my new stuff next week. I can't wait to try it! Everyone has been very helpful and informative.

Have a Hoppy Easter!

I ordered some from her (Judy) last week and she hand-made a container out of foam-core board and than she wrapped them in bubble wrap. I just sharpen mine and they all sharpened up really nice, no problems! She really did go the extra mile to make sure that they would be fine during shipping. I sent her an e-mail and made a paypal payment and had the pencils in two days!! I would buy from her again!

Not just yet. It's just a pile of pieces at the moment. I do have it all cut out, with the fusible fleece applied to give it extra body. It's all a matter of finding the time to sew it all up.

I can link you to the original portfolio, but I'm making changes to make it work for me. I've sized it up and added interior panels to hold all my pencils plus some. I hope to have it all done by this weekend.

Aw, man-stinky! But I did just order some from the website someone mentioned here last week and I got my pencils today! Yippee!!! Maybe you can fill up your collection there. [was I the only one who spent quite a long time figuring out who I knew from Wyoming, MN, that would send me a package? And do you think living in Wyoming, MN, leads to a lot of "who's on first" confusion?]

Thanks for asking. We are fine, as well as our immediate neighborhood, but not too far away a lot of trees down. We just had to stay in our place of safety for a bit (turns out our corgi thinks her place of safety is in my DH's lap "I'm light as a feather!").

Ok, now if you read this far, I do have a question...what is a good soft pink to use for flowers? I was coloring the Fifth Avenue Floral flowers and just couldn't get a pink I liked...either too soft, or too bright, or two mauvey. I finally ended up using pink blush & carmine red together, but it still didn't look great.

Quick fix if the lead breaks when you sharpen your pencil: Put a dot of super glue in the pencil and reinsert the piece of lead that came out. Once it dries you can use the pencil as usual and just sharpen as usual.

Mine change too. I usually can't get the leaves dark enough with just green so I use reds like tuscan red then go over it with dark green. Black grape is good to use too.

Is there a "How to" thread for using this gamsol of which you speak or baby oil? I love my prisma color pencils and would like to learn how to use them differently. Thanks. Joanne

Hi Joanne;

There are lots of resources on this technique. Take a look at the Gamsol Magic Tutorial here on SCS. Diane also has a great tutorial on her blog and there's another on mine. You can also do a search on Youtube for "Gamsol" and find a few things there.

Default Diane Rocks!

Diane is the best at using Prisma colroed pencils-convinced me with her tutorial...(of course I am Janet..tee-hee)...

Diane helped me a lot-giving me encouragement and step by step hints. Not to mention her generous images to learn the technique.

If you haven't checked out her tutorial, don't wait..do it now!

I love my Prsima colroed pencils and use baby oil on Georgia Pacific paper form WalMart, just like Diane. For inks, I use Versa Fine and/or StazOn.

Works with like a charm!

I love coloring this way. I have even been teaching classes at my local scrapbook store about this technique. I have had two classes so far and one more to go for May. It has been a big success!

BTW, I use baby oil instead of gamsol (OMS). I found that I was getting headaches even though it is supposed to be odorless. Check out my tutorial on my blog.

I use Archival Jet Black ink from Ranger on Georgia Pacific white card stock from Wal-Mart. I have never had any problems with bleeding or smudging either.

I can link you to the original portfolio, but I'm making changes to make it work for me. I've sized it up and added interior panels to hold all my pencils plus some. I hope to have it all done by this weekend.

Definitely! I'm working on the elastic spacing at the moment to maximize how many pencils I can get to fit. Once I get that worked out, I can start sewing.

Janet~ Thanks for all the kind words! I am always willing to help someone else learn (and get addicted to something)! I've made some great friends by offering my help! Everyone at SCS is amazing and friendly!

Default copics AND prismas

I haven't totally kept up with this thread so I don't know if this has been mentioned or not. I was admiring michelles work and she directed me to a tutorial she had done combining copics and prismas. She really does beautiful work and I sometimes use this technique because A. I am not good with nor do I have many copics and B. I like my prismas better. This technique gives a slightly different look than either which is a nice alternative to use in some applications.
