magnetic closure thingys

I'm making gift card holders and I've seen these gizmos and thought they'd look nicer than velcro. Where the heck do you get them?

magnetic snaps or magnetic closures....

I looked online HL and can't find them. Maybe they have an actual name??

Cook22 06-30-2012 10:21 AM

Basic Grey make them and I know Frantic Stamper has them because I just added some into my basket this morning. Use Magnetic in the search bar and they'll come.
I used to be able to get generic ones in a local store, but not the last two times I tried :-(.
Just be sure to use a good strong glue. I don't find the adhesive on them to be sufficient, and usually use a hot glue gun.

Hobby Lobby used to have them. Haven't checked lately. They were not in the scrapbooking section though. They were in the one of the hobby and craft isles.

A Muse Studio sells them too:

magnetic discs - self adhesive; Slim as cardstock, easy to open, use anywhere you wish to add a closure or an interactive embellishment, 3/8'' wide by 1/32'' thick, 10 pairs per pkg $6.25

The photo looks like the Basic Grey logo.

The Basic Grey brand is called magnetic snaps indicating that there is a metal side as well.

do these come with ... well you know two sides a plain metal or something for the magnet to stick to so they can be used as closures?

Yes they stick to each other but they are not marked -/+. They will flip itself over if you try to match them incorrectly. I use them all the time to close boxes, bags, etc. I use ES6000 or similar glue and have never had a problem.

I've ordered several items from CapCo and never have any problem.

I love the basic grey magnets also, but they do not stick well! As far as Velcro goes
Tombow has hook and loop tabs and they are super thin and strong!I found them in micheals! They cost less than the magnets!Hugs!

If thickness matters, note that the Basic Grey ones are 1/32 thick and the bottle cap ones are 1/16. For use on c/s, I would use the 1/32 thick ones. Also, I have used the very thin Velcro you mentioned and it works well on c/s for closures and is cheaper and less expensive. I got mine at Walmart in the sewing section, I think.

I have found that the magnetic strips with adhesive backing works for me. (Think I got a roll at Joann some time ago.) Sometimes I just cut up the advertising magnets from various companies and glue them on as they have no adhesive. They are no super strong, but when used to attract each other they are strong enough for a card. I like them as they are thin and light so great for mailing!

I wouldnt buy the basic grey ones. I found mine were losing their silver coating to reveal a nasty dark grey interior with icky grit that fell off everywhere. I sent an email to customer service to get them replaced. They told me they were being extra nice to replace them as usually I'd have to return them to point of purchase. So I received the replacements only to find that the same thing was happening to them! I sent them an email and so far nothing. Clearly they have manufacturing issues. Stay away from them. Especially if you expect yor project to have any longevity. That's the only time I'd use these because of the cost and I'd expect them to last as long or longer than any paper project but not so. In case you wondered, they were stored in their original package in a clean dry place with no salt air or serious humidity so no excuses Basic Grey!

is the magnet closure safe for the gift cards

i would prefer to use these little magnets to close my gift card holders. i dislike the velcro, its always so strong. but i've done a bit of research and there is some thought that the magnetic strip on the gift card, credit card, whatever could be harmed by the magnets themselves.

anyone have any experience? a church group would like to purchase some gift card holders, but i dont want to render all their gift cards useless.

other ideas?
