I am a pencil girl at heart. I guess that is a good thing as I don't own any markers HAH! ( ok I have a set of dual tip American Craft ones that I let my dd use ..)
Anyway..I have Prismas. .. A LOT ..around 300+ with the regular and Verithing ( I don't count..yk..denial lol)...
Faber Castell Polychromes ( 120 set)..
Inktense..
Tinted Charcoal..
Derwent and prismacolor Water color pencils...And a set of SU ones..( I am ordering some more Derwent Watercolors though..have a small set and NEED mroe colors)
I have been lusting over some other Colored pencils ( I KNOW..)
what other brands have you used? DO you like/dislike them?
oooohhh pencils....i have HUNDREDS hahhahaha!!! ok so here are my thoughts - lyra polycolor oil based pencils are probably my favorite. derwent coloursoft - LOVE too. caran d'ache pablo - i did not like. Cd'a luminance i really liked BUT not enough to justify the price. a set i really like too for something fun - derwent metallic colored pencils if you haven't tried those.
i am itching for some graphitint and some inktense myself.......
I love my Derwent Coloursoft Pencils. I have A LOT of prismacolor pencils and copic markers but always reach for the coloursoft pencils. I use them the same way I used my prismacolor pencils, but I prefer the softer leads of the coloursoft. I use baby oil for blending.
And now you got me interested in the polychromes! Do you use them like prismacolor pencils, or are they watercolor type? I might have to get some of those.
We're traveling, so I just have Derwent/Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils and a set of Polychromos with me. The Polychromos are new to me - I am generally a Prismacolor girl... but those take up 2 large cases, and I got a really really good deal on ebay on the Polys, so they were here waiting for me in the States. I have used them once so far - they blend well and if you generally get frustrated with Prismacolor's breakage issues, you will like the strength of the leads.
At home I have a variety of.....
Inktense (LOVE these, need more - you can use these with gamsol but they are much more vibrant with water)
Derwent Colorsoft (not my favorite - too crumbly for me)
Derwent Artist & Studio (gave them to my kids, actually - hard leads, don't blend well)
Derwent Graphitint (love these... deep earthy neutrals, gamsol and water soluble)
Blick Studio (good pencil, similar to Prismacolor)
Caran d'Ache Pablo (just a few - love them, but too expensive to have lots)
Raffine (inexpensive, but a good pencil for the price, decent color range)
Cretacolor pastel pencils (fun to work with - haven't used them much because I couldn't find a fixative)
If ever I use up my Derwent watercolor pencils, I will replace them with the Albrecht Durer. Love those - so vibrant and creamy.
dini is totally right about the coloursoft - they ARE really crumbly which can get a little annoying.
i have the derwent watercolor but rarely use them - if i watercolor, which is rare, i use my twinkling h2os. i had a set of derwent studio and did not like them either - the lead was way too hard.

Dini..I do A LOT of pastel work I have a Fairy on my blog done in nothing but pastels ( sticks and pencils ) and you can fix them with KRYLON Workable fixative..ot Krylon matte fixative. ..I have in a pinch usd a VERY FINE mist of aresol hairspray. Now I wouldn't use the hairspray on a comission pieces b/c I am not sure of what the lasting effects would be ie; paper discoloration..but for cards I thin kit would be fine.
I live in SE Asia, so artist-quality supplies are hard to come by... I had forgotten about hairspray until just recently so that is what I have for now. We're in the States now... but my pencils are at home.
I too LOVE the graphtint pencils. I used those on an Indian ( it is on my blog too)...they are fun to work with ..very soft..they would probably be good for a woodsy scene or masculine card. The only issue I have had with them is breakage. WOW..you think Prismas are bad to break. Well Graphtints are more claky in consistency than colored pencils. I had one that kept breaking..over and over. Well I contacted Derwent about it..and not only did they replace THAT pencil..BUT they sent me a WHOLE NEW SET..!!! And didn't even want the broken one back. It was fantastic customer service. I need to play with these more.
I do want some more watercolor pencils though. I love to watercolor but don't want to get my tubes out to do just a small image. I have a lot by some standards but would LOVE a larger set of Derwents. I like some of the colors in the Prismacolor line of WC pencils..but the Derwents seem much richer to me.
I didn't like the Prismacolor watercolor pencils. JMHO.
The Graphitints are a graphite-based lead, so if you're used to coloring with a heavy hand with the wax-based pencils, you might just need to lighten up a bit. I like the Graphitints because I can use them with wax-based or water-soluble pencils.
Dini..do you lay the Graphtinits down first then use the cp over them? Doesn't the OMS lighten or remove the Graphtint? OR..since it kinda stains the paper a bit..does the OMS not have any affect??

I use them the same way I use my other pencils - usually as a last layer since they are so dark. If you look at the pencil samples at the link I posted above, you can see the difference between the Graphitint blended with OMS and with water. The left side of the sample is with OMS and the right side is with water.
