Default Nesties Card Creator Sets A & B

When you combine Card Creator Sets A & B you get a set of nesting dies that have a 1/8" reveal. Except.....has anyone noticed that the biggest die does NOT have an 1/8" reveal when you lay it on a standard size (5 1/2 x 4 1/4) card? When I bought these sets I NATURALLY assumed when they were described as having a 1/8" reveal that that would include the reveal from the edge of my card. It's the primary reason I bought them.

Not only do you not get a 1/8" reveal, but it's almost impossible to line this die up on a piece of 5 1/2 x 4 1/4 cardstock...so you have to you something bigger which means a lot of waste.

Anyone kwim?

Sorry - that sounds like a real bummer.

I just found this video on youtube showing the dies in use. When she demos them, it sure looks like the largest die leaves a 1/8th border on an A2 card.

Take a look. She specifically says the dies are made to use with A2 size cards.

I have the A set of A2 Matting Basics and I cut/embossed the largest one in the set and this is how it looks on my A2 card front. There is not alot of my card base showing but it is showing. Hope this helps you.

Hi Debbie....Thanks for going to the trouble you did. It does show, but it doesn't show the 1/8" that they said it would show and that I bought it for. I almost always start my cards with a panel on top of the base that I've always trimmed to a 1/8" reveal. I thought if I purchased this set I would be able to eliminate the trimming AND get a nice embossed edge. I think if they advertise it as a set that has a 1/8" reveal that's what it should have.

buggainok....I looked at your link...thank you too for going to the trouble. I've seen it before and again, it was one of the reasons I bought it....it clearly states that it's a 1/8" reveal.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for your input.

I guess it really didn't bother me. I think it really is what look you want on your card and that is the beauty of the Card Creator line of dies. I usually use the largest die in the A2 Matting Basics B set to get the look you are describing. I love the Card Creator line and think it makes cardmaking super easy.

Debbie....I'm really glad you're happy with them....LOL. (I really am....sometimes true meanings get lost when one is posting to a forum), but I'm disappointed.....if I use the largest die in the B set I still don't get a 1/8" reveal....I get a 1/4" reveal. In other words, there are 14 dies in the two sets....and I need a 13 1/2. Wanna bet they come out with that for another $30.00? This is as cantankerous as I've ever been in a forum....obviously it's not directed at you.....I really appreciate your input.

Thanks again,
Jo

I don't have this set but I think you have every right to be disappointed because the biggest die in the set isn't doing what it was advertised to do which makes it rather useless. A 1/8" border is a 1/8" border and it looks really uneven to me in the photo. I like to have even 1/8" borders on my cards/layers and if they are uneven, it really bugs me. I wonder if that particular die in your set is faulty (?) and I would definitely contact Spellbinders and ask to have that one replaced. It could be that the product has gone out with that same problem in a number of the sets so alerting Spellbinders to what you are experiencing would be a good idea I think.

JoBear2-

Peeked at your blog. The baby card you made is just precious! All you cards are so well thought out. Love you choice of images.

Didn't mean to go 'off the subject' of this thread.

According to Spellbinders Website:

Matting Basics A
Long Rectangle: 3⅞ x ”
1: 1⅛ x 2⅜”
2: 1⅝ x 2⅞”
3: 2⅛ x 3⅜”
4: 2⅝ x 3⅞”
5: 3⅛ x 4⅜”
6: 3⅝ x 4⅞”
7: 4⅛ x 5⅜”

Matting Basics B

Long Rectangle SM: 3⅜ x ”
Long Rectangle LG: 3⅞ x 1”
1: ⅞ x 2⅛”
2: 1⅜ x 2⅝”
3: 1⅞ x 3⅛”
4: 2⅜ x 3⅝”
5: 2⅞ x 4⅛”
6: 3⅜ x 4⅝”
7: 3⅞ x 5”

There's a problem here for sure. Die 7 in set B EITHER
...has a typo and should say 5-1/8 instead of 5-1/4 OR
...you would have 1/8 on the top and bottom (1/4 total) and 3/16 on the sides (3/8 total) if your card was in the portrait position Debbie has her card picture.

I hope that it is a typo. I really wish they'd fix that. (I have said something several times)

But that doesn't answer Jo's question.
Set A would have a 1/16 inch reveal and set B would have a 3/16 inch reveal according to the measurements Spellbinders gives. From there, they are in the 1/8 inch increments.

That still doesn't solve your problem, Jo, but at least it explains it! The only way you could solve the problem is to trim your card base to 8-1/4 by 5-3/8 and use the largest die in set B. I have to trim my card bases in my cards for my mom so that she can get them out of the envelope, since she can't manage that any more.

I think it would be great for Spellbinders to confirm the actual sizes in question. I am interested in getting these 2 sets BUT I want to do exactly what Jo wants to do and eliminate the trimming which would be a great time saver and give a nice embossed edge - which is the whole point of investing money in a die/dieset for doing the work for you. Each set costs over $40 here in Australia so I want it to be right for that amount of money because I would be investing $80 plus postage to get them :o

I would contact SB and complain. See what they have to say. If they are selling it as a 1/8" reveal and it isn't something is wrong somewhere. I agree with you, I bet they come out with another set for 30 bucks to do what this was advertised to do! Good luck.

I don't mean to muddy the waters, but I'm going to anyway. ;)
When you say a 1/8" reveal, do you mean a total of 1/8" difference in the two mats so you have a border of 1/16" on each side? Or do you mean 1/8" border on each side with a difference of 1/4" in the sizes of the two mats?
Thanks.
Dea

I have both sets, A and B. The measurements must include a typo, because you don't get any uneven spacing between top and sides with that die. Good catch on that, Diane!

I didn't even think about this issue you raise when I bought mine. I find that the largest one in the large set fits on the front of a A2 card without any trouble, and leaves a thin border so that you can definitely see the color of the card base. I happen to like the way it looks. I use that die quite a bit for card fronts and for the insides of all of my cards.

I can understand how you would be disappointed if you were specifically wanting to end up with a 1/8th inch reveal, though. I like Diane's suggested workaround. I might try it for some of my thicker cards - the ones that are hard to squeeze into an envelope. I'm pretty big on layers and dimensionals ;-).

You could call them - Spellbinders has very good customer service and they try to make things right with their customers in my experience so maybe they would offer to take the sets back - but I went and took a look at the website and read the description of the Matting Basics and it seems like they are saying your LAYERS will be either 1/4 or 1/8th of an inch, depending on which dies you use. It doesn't say anything about the relationship between the largest layer and an A2 card. So they might not consider your complaint valid.

If you do call them, I'd love to know what they say.

Really sorry they don't seem to be working out for you. Having bought both sets myself, I know they didn't come cheap.
