I love my new Cameo so much that I have started a new e-cutting challenge blog, The Paper Cabana! I am looking for a few more design team members for our weekly challenges. You must use at least one paper cut in each of your projects, which can be a card, layout, 3D item, or any other project. You may use stamps or any other media on your projects also, as long as there is at least one paper cut. You also need to have a blog to feature your work and provide details on your projects. We are also featuring guest designers for the month of September and still have a few spots open. If you are interested in joining the design team, which will begin October 1st, or being a guest designer for September, please email ThePaperCabana@gmail.com. Our first challenge starts this Wednesday!

Does anyone know how to convert a .pdf to a .svg to use it with your Cameo?

Gail, happy to hear you've got things worked out! The new blade did the trick for me also when I was having issues, it seems some machines were shipped with blades from a bad batch. And patience is definitely the key, and a little trial and error with new materials. But I gotta tell you, I love my Cameo, I am just amazed at the detail I can get on the tiniest of cuts!

Dana, I don't have an answer for you, but if you ask on the Silhouette Plus forum, someone will know. They seem to know everything there is to know about the Slhouettes!

Here is a brilliant forum for Silhouette users. Full of tutorials, cutting files and members with so much information & expertise with the machines. Well worth joining. I nearly always end up posting this link when I see Silhouette discussions- I still have my original silhouette, but when it finally gives out, I will be going with a Cameo.

Ladies I saw on a thread somewhere that you can recover your original 51 free die cut files somehow. My laptop died and I had to replace it but need that info again to recover the free files that did not come over....can you help? Thanks so much in advance.

Amber if you search in the store for 50 free and/or original 50, they come up.

Put in Original 50 or Free 50 in the search box. You should be able to find them hopefully. You may have to go to page 2 before you will find them. Hopefully, this will help. Good luck!

Here are the directions I have

This is a known issue with Silhouette. Here are the steps you need to follow and all of your shapes will be restored:

1. Open the Silhouette Studio software
2. Go to the “File” menu (PC) or “Silhouette Studio” menu (Mac)
3. Select “Preferences”
4. Select “Advanced”
5. Select “Restore the initial 51 designs”

Sorry about your laptop dying

That is so nice! Does that really work Barbara Jay? There are suppose to be 51 free ones or 50 ---but we were never able to find more than like 47. May go and check that out and see what I missed. Thanks.

In addition to my instructions Barbara Jay posted, also do a search for "50" in the silhouette store, there are free shapes there too. Also there are 2 if you search for FREE

Ok...another question. Have you ladies seen the free cut files that "Birds Cards" posts. They are simply beautiful. They download in: downloads/software but I cannot figure out how to use them with the silhouette cameo. Do you know how it works?

Yes, her files are gorgeous! You can either do a file-> open and browse to where you saved it or do an import to your library and in the same way browse to the file.

Just wanted to point something out to you all. If you are loading all your designs into your library, this will eventually cause the start up to be really really slow since it has to put all those designs into memory (kind of like installing a lot of fonts on your computer). You can save your designs (other than Silhouette which automatically download to a specified location by default within the program files) to a different folder and then just open them as needed rather than having them all in the library.

Just throwing my tuppence worth in here - I am not very experienced by any means, but I have found that another thing that can result in paper tearing is the quality of the paper itself - a nice short-fiber dense card like Gina K goes through it like butter, but if I put a cheaper long-fiber card through it will pretty much be guaranteed to tear...one to bear in mind - not all card is created equal!

As Waltzingmouse said, the type of cardstock you use will make a difference. There are a lot of factors in the paper - how fibrous it is and fibre density, the humidity in your room/house, the ink saturation of the paper, grain of the paper. It took me quite a while to learn how to compensate for all these things (I've had my machine for about 5 years and still don't get it right all the time). But what I have found that causes tearing the most on the designs I'm trying to cut is cutting too fast. What I think is happening is the blade doesn't have enough time to turn to the direction it is cutting and will snag the paper and tear it. Also, a sharp blade really helps to eliminate tearing. I find that the Recollections cardstock cuts beautifully in my CraftRobo. Also, Wausau Exact Index cuts just as easily as the Recollections. I do cut Stampin Up cardstock but I don't use it that often and I usually do a double cut on it. I also use Bazzil and it works good too, but not as well as the Recollections.

Also I have found it helps to slow the speed down - when I called Customer Support that is what they suggested. It really has made a difference in those flourishes and phrases.

i love the silhouette cameo. I found it easy to learn and use. Any design I want is easily available for at the most $.99. I will probably not use the 2 cricuts I have ever again.

Clever Someday has the most AMAZING Silhouette videos. Check out this one, which shows exactly how to convert PDF to SVG. Some of the techniques are Mac specific but the main part applies to both Windows and Mac.

Also, be sure to watch her "Tracing without Tears" video series, up to 7 episodes with an 8th wrap up episode to come. She not only shows you how to trace anything and everything, but also how to fix problems and what the software is actually doing with the myterious high pass and low pass filters. It is fantastic and so empowering!

Let me know what you think! I feel so blessed that I purchased my Cameo right as she was starting this series!
