I do have both, but if I had to choose, I would pick the mega. Sometimes the giga seems too big for a card. And with the mega, you could always use a template to make a smooth oval to put behind if you want it to fill in a larger space.
I have the mega but I want the giga. The mega is a good size and fits on cards and ATC's. The giga is nice to have so you can put the mega on. You can start out with the mega and if you like that..you can save up to buy the giga!

LOL, sorry, just trying to do my job at enabling...;) but seriously, if I had to choose, I think I would get the mega. It's not too big to be "on it's own" on a card, and can still fit some images comfortably.
At some point you are going to want both. For a long time I only had the mega, wished I had done it the other way around, I say giga first, save your pennies and then go for the mega.
I'd get the giga first and later the mega. I bought both scalloped ovals and giga circle last summer and I use the giga more than the mega. I have the oval punch which fits in the giga.
I just got giga and mega scalloped square and mega circle punches. My LSS just got 32 boxes of these punches and they had over 100 ladies on their waiting list. I was on the waiting list for months so I was so glad that they finally arrived.
I don't have either of the ovals because I can't find them anywhere, but I do have the mega circle and wish I had the giga instead (or in addition to)! The mega circle was the only one I've been able to get my hands on because they're sold out or waitlisted everywhere!

I was going thru the same thing at first...mega/giga...but realized as I tried to buy them...you don't have a choice!! You get what you can find. LOL
I got the mega scalloped oval at a local scrapbook store and had to order it. Took maybe 3 days. And I seen everyone suggesting ALL THAT SCRAPS on here so I went there and seen they had the giga scalloped circle in stock so I ordered it...that was friday the 13th and I got it today!! Yesterday on website again and seen..they had the mega scalloped circle and of course I ordered it. LOL The giga scalloped oval is the last one I want. So I am keeping my eyes open. No hurry tho...lol ALL THAT SCRAPS is great...fast service. I ordered cuttlebug embossing folders from there about a month ago. So thanks to all who suggested it.
If you have a Cricut the Minni Monograms cart cuts circles and squares in both plain and scalloped. Various sizes can be cut so you can layer all you want.;)
The Alphalicious cart does a scalloped oval & circle, but it is a charm and has a hole cut in it but you can cover it with ribbon or another layer c/s. Buy the time you buy all the punches you've spent near the cost of a cart.... Just Sayin...
I got the giga square from a trade and I love it. I want the mega too, but I'm not in a rush b/c I just make a squar a little smaller with straight edges and the giga just "frames" the square. It looks pretty.
I agree that the giga fits a regular size card perfectly.
good luck
7 kids has giga scallop and regular ovals as well as giga scalloped circles and regular circles in. They also have mega circles and mega scalloped circles.
