A few years ago, we were making it by adding a little PearlEx to a small pump bottle of hairspray.

Yep, and if you want a more vibrant color like the Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist, you can add a few drops of reinker.

I found a couple tubs of mica powder on eBay last year... I've used it in a mini-mister with a couple of eyedroppers of Distress Ink. Lovely effect...

Worth a shot
I found these instructions for making your own glimmer mist. I haven't tried it yet, but is sounds like it is worth a shot.

Years ago as a new stamper I made a whole supply of all my powders w/hair spray thinking they would be ready when I needed them. What a mess. The fine mist sprayers clogged, it was hard to keep the powders mixed smoothly. I finally cleaned out all the bottle I could and tossed the rest. If you go with the hairspray method, only mix and use as you need (IMHO).

At CHA, Wendy Vecchi from Ranger shared how to make something like this...
She used Ranger's Mini Mister and filled it about 3/4 full with water, added a few drops of Distress Reinker for color and then a little sprinkle of Perfect Pearls - not Pearl Ex. She put some Perfect Pearls on a little spoon and tapped it in the bottle.
Shake it to mix it and spritz away. The perfect pearls have a fixative in them - which makes them different from pearl ex - so the finished product doesn't need to be sealed with anything.
She had lots of colors and made some beautiful things with them. I linked her blog above - check out her July and August posts. She has lots of samples there.

I have some that I made a few years ago with the hairspray and pearl ex. I have to give it some good shaking when I go to use it but that doesn't bother me. One thing I have learned is to put down protective paper and hold my project upright when I spray it. Any larger (too large) drops will fall before they reach my CS.

Yup... we just learned this at Ranger U... I didn't know there was a difference between Pearl-Ex and Perfect Pearls until then... Pearl Ex needs a fixative... Perfect Pearls has a fixative in it... it becomes permanent when any liquid is added... With the number of Distressed Ink reinkers and the number of colors of Perfect Pearls, the color pallet is unending... it is SOOOO cool!
And if you mix it up in those little Mini Misters that Ranger has... you don't need to make up HUGE bottles of the stuff... so you can have lots of colors available!

After reading this thread I decided to try making my own sparkle spray. Ive wanted to do this for some time but got lazy =P So i just experimented, perfect pearls blue, a little water and winsor and newton iridescent medium for watercolors. The perfect pearl clogged my little spray bottle and wasnt blue enough. So i poured it all into another bottle, added winsor and newton ultramarine ink, a little bit of liquid pure pigment, and more iridescent medium. It comes out as a light, very very glittery blue mist =)

Me too, I just shake mine! Also, thanks so much for the tip about holding upright, even my TAGMs spit big drops!
I have also made lots by mixing RPs with hairspray. Works just as well as all the other ideas.

gum arabic?
I think I read something somewhere about using gum arabic in the water to act as a fixative. Isn't a powdered version the fixative in perfect pearls? Or am I thinking of something else? Hopefully someone knows!

I use gum arabic , distilled water and PEARL EX mixed together and apply this to the image with a blender pen for coloring.
Was that what you read? Someone had asked about how to seal Pearl Ex so it did not keep rubbing off the card and I use this method instead of the spray fixative.

A tip I learnt too for a successful 'mist' is to lay your cardstock down, inside of a cardboard carton.
With the open side of the carton facing you and the cardstock laying on the 'floor' of the carton ----------- aim your mister towards the back of the carton and puff away in short, sharp bursts.
The mist will drift down onto your cardstock (and you will have a groovy colourful carton one day too - it's rather like a spray booth).
Why not try taping one cardstock at the back of the booth, and laying another on the bottom? (kill two birds maybe).

Here's a link to a recipe for shimmer spray using gum arabic. For color I used rit dye, but I'm sure you could also use reinkers. It turns out so pretty & shimmery.

Glimmer Mist
I have Faerie Dust which is a Pearlized Pigment Powder, can I use it by filling the mister bottle 1/2 full of rubbing alcohol and flling the rest with water and adding about 1/8 tsp Faerie Dust? Rosie

Thanks so much for this tip - I gave up on this technique because all I got were great globs, no matter what I did - now I know the secret! THANKS.

I just got a great deal on the Perfect Pearls on Ebay!! I won 3 sets of PP, each set containing 4 pots of the Pearls. So that is 12 pots of PP, I also got the pad, and the set of 2 markers for $22!! I was a very happy camper!!

Me too!! It didn't work in the mini mister bottles, but I found some nice 2 oz. size bottles at Dollar Tree, and Meijer's...worked great, and you can buy the bigger size Mod Podge at Hobby Lobby (at least that's where I got mine!!). Very inexpensive in the long run and will make lots of glimmer mist sprays!!

I use the little travel size pumps from Walmart that are .97 and fill it 1/4 full of rubbing alcohol and the rest with a liquid hairspray. I have found for me that the little bit of ra makes it not clog the pump.

Here is a little video I did making my own shimmer spray using my copic refills and blender and perfect pearls:
http://sherrie-cardcreme.blogspot.co...mer-spray.html
Now I have sprays that match my copics!
The beauty of this being alcohol based not water based is that it will stick permanently to most surfaces.

I was on your blog earlier today and love your tutorial! How do you dry your little creations like flowers when you're done spritzing them?
Also, your creations are stunning!! I love them!

Thanks so much! Actually because it is alcohol blender and alcohol reinkers that I am using it dries almost instantly. I do give them a little zap with my heat gun over a craft sheet if I am too impatient....

Do you have to use something to "fix" the Pearl Ex one so it doesn't smear?
