Ok, I've seen them in use, I've read that the tape is much cheaper (enough that you actually recoup the cost of the gun), yadda yadda.
1. Is your experience that this is so?
2. What version do you recommend?
3. Where is the best place to purchase the thing?
4. Why would you NOT buy one?
5. You can laugh at me now.
6. I did do a search but it didn't come up with anything for ATG in advanced or regular
7. No really, it's ok to laugh at me.
8. I would be using it mostly for cards or scrapbook pages.
9. I'm feeling "Monkish" so I had to post this number.
10. And this one.
*I think* the two most popular ATG guns used by stampers are the ATG 700 and ATG 714. They can be seen and purchased here. FramingSupplies has about the best price you'll find for the gun and tapes.
I have the ATG 700 and LOVE IT! I have to admit ... it is big and somewhat bulky, and a little tricky to get used to, but once you get the hang of it you're set to go!
I did a comparison between the ATG 50 and 714 on my blog. Feel free to check it out. I think it does a decent job of showing the difference. Beware though...I think you will want to buy one!

OH! That's a wonderful comparison. I was almost 100% convinced to go with the ATG 50 until you told someone that the 714 is better if you like to go RIGHT on an edge.
I do, so I'm going to invest in the higher priced one. Drat.
The cheaper tape though... does it work with the 714?

I'll just jump in here real quick and say that I LOVE my 714 which I got at Framingsupplies.com
I stick with their tape too just because I'm happy with it and I would hate to buy a whole box of unhappy, but that's just me.
It's pretty easy to get used to using it. It was intimidating when I pulled it out of the packaging the first day but quickly knew that I made the right decision.
Sorry I didn't number my answers for you. LOL

The cheaper tapes totally works with the 714. It is sticky, sticky, sticky! Once I put something down, it is there for life! It will tear the c/s underneath if you try to pull it up.
I'm very happy with the cheaper tape from The Tape Depot. Not sure if it is photo safe, though. I do cards and 3D items mostly. The Tape Depot has it listed on ebay cheaper than at their website. Getting ready myself to order more.
I wan to add that I looked at the Tape Depot tape and is acid free. I have heard good and bad reviews on this tape. I have had 2 shipments of this tape and not a bad roll in 24.
Also want to add that I feel that there is a bit of a learning curve with the ATG tape dispenser. When I got mine, I tried it, the tape kept slipping off. I got frustrated and put the thing away. Got it out again later and over time it became more comfortable. I chalked it up to being a lefty. This machine is geared towards right handed people but I am stubborn and I figured it out. Now, next to my BS, it is the best tool I ever purchased!
I have a 714 (about 3 years now) and I only use the Tape Depot tape. I have no complaints and have easily used more than 36 rolls. It sticks very well...like a previous poster said..it will rip your paper if you try to take it apart. It works for me. I make a lot of cards so will keep using this cost effective way of putting the cards together. My friend has the bigger 1/2" one and it is IMHO too big for cards...kind of like over kill. The 714 is 1/4" and more than adequate for cards.
blessings.
I love mine! I ordered mine from framing supplies and extra tape. Best investment I have made. I think I have had mine for 3 years now and no problems at all.(knock on wood.)
A problem that I had with the ATG 50 is that the roll of tape would not stay down in those grooves. I would press it down, it would sit into those grooves, but after using it, would ride back up. There was no way to keep it held down. What I ended up doing, was to get an empty tape wheel and put that on top of the other. That kept it from moving out of those grooves. Hard to explain. I'll try and get a pic when I get home to show what I mean.
I ended up buying the 714 and gave the 50 to my daughter-in-law.

I have the 714, which uses the 1/4 inch tape. I find it works very well for cards and ATC's, which is primarily what I make. I've heard that the 1/2 inch tape is better for bulky or heavy things, but since I do that so rarely, I just use more of the 1/4 inch when I'm worried that something won't hold fast.
I have the ATG714 that I got from cropandstick.com. I also bought their refills and have had great luck with it sticking. They had great customer service!!!
I ordered the 714....left it in the box for weeks and finally got it out to try it...NO TAPE CAME WITH IT! I couldn't believe it! They could have at least put ONE roll of tape with it...they're not cheap! So back into the box it went, and now I'm waiting on the tape I had to order separately. Live and learn!

I just wanted to pipe in and mention that if you order the ATG 714 from Pack-N-Tape, it comes with a free roll of acid free tape. It looks like their price is comparable to framingsupplies.com's price too. I hope this is helpful!
Piping in with my 2 cents worth. I couldn't imagine spending that much on a tape dispensor. Good thing a have a fabulous BFF. She gave me the ATG 700 as a gift. I use it for for both cards and LO's and love it! I never have to worry about things falling off. I got my last batch of tape from the tape depot. I made sure that their tape was photo safe before I ordered because I do use one adhesive for everything.
I have two of the ATG 700 guns, but would like to use the 1/4" tape in it. Has anyone used this gun with the adapter? If so, did it work well? It would be much cheaper to order the adapter than to order a whole new gun.
I haven't tried the adapter but I've read in several places that it's a real PITA. Maybe you could try trading one of them for a 714? That way you'd have one of each. Just a thought
i have had my 714 for 2 years now and dont know how i lived without it. i use tape depot tape and have no problems. i got my DD the atg50 from tapedepot and she loves it. if i had to do over, i would do the atg50 just because of the price.
any savings.... i seem to hand it over to PTI ! just did that today and felt like a total addict....when i have stamps that havent been inked yet ! sigh
I have had my 700 for probably 8 years and love it. It is much cheaper to use then other tapes. It is bulky, and does have a slight learning curve, but even with that I would purchase it again. The biggest thing is when you run it on your paper and are ready to stop, twist it slightly on the paper rather then pulling it straight up. I have made many wedding invitations and would have been lost without it!
1. Is your experience that this is so? - saves me money on tape but I've learned my lesson and only buy the 3m red tape; the 3m acid free gold is gummy; other tapes stick really well but you can't adjust it. The minute the other tapes go down it's stuck and I need a little bit of time to make minor adjustments.
2. What version do you recommend? 714
3. Where is the best place to purchase the thing?framing supplies
4. Why would you NOT buy one? I have friends that won't buy one because they say it's too big. It's just a learning curve and I can always find Big Red on my messy table
5. You can laugh at me now o not it's good to get a good review. I've bought some things with based on recommendations and hated them. Our toys are pricey and you want to spend you $ and get the best you can that works for you
6. I did do a search but it didn't come up with anything for ATG in advanced or regular - try google and search ATG tape gun - you'll get plenty of hits
7. No really, it's ok to laugh at me. - nah, you'll get help some day
8. I would be using it mostly for cards or scrapbook pages. I use it for all my papercrafts projects unless it call for mega-hold and then I use red-loner tape
1. Is your experience that this is so? Bought the ATG 50 (generic) first, loved the ATG but was having problems. Could only use if standing up. Replaced with the 714, and now can use standing and sitting. I can explain The tape tracks along the back of the 50.
In order for me to see where it was rolling and putting down the tape, I had to stand. If I didn't stand, I also tended to lean the ATG towards me, that tilting would pull the roller up from the paper and not put it down at all.
The 714 tape tracks along the roller right in front of me and I can see it easily, also my tendency to lean it towards me will only help the roller making contact. And I can use sitting down.
2. What version do you recommend? 714
3. Where is the best place to purchase the thing? I bought mine from Pack-n-Tape. Superfast shipping, came with a roll of 3M gold (wanted to test against the generic tape I got with the 50). Total cost with shipping was $48 and some change and shipped FedEx.

I looked into Glue Glider Pro and it was the most expensive way to go. Here is a break down with the current prices I found today.
Glue Glider Pro refill (Overstock) @ 8.59 for 65 feet (.13 per foot)
Mono Adhesive refill (Penwa.com) @ 2.10 for 39.3 feet (.05 per foot)
3M Gold 908 roll (FramingSupplies.com) @ 3.49 for 108 feet (.03 per foot)
Generic ATG roll (TheTapeDepot/Ebay Store) @ 1.35 for 108 feet (.01 per foot)
The Mono Adhesive isn't that much more expensive if bought through Penwa, but I seem to constantly be running out. 12 refills of Mono takes up a bit more storage space and just seemed a pain to be grabbing a new one after a few cards/scrapbook pages. I love my ATG 714 and currently have the 3M Gold in it, as it came with a free roll (from Pack-n-Tape). I still have a lot of the generic tape (bought from TheTapeDepot/Ebay Store with my old ATG 50) I will switch to once I run out. I'll get a good comparison between the two for which I will buy when I need more.

I have a 700 converted to 1/4 inch. I may go back to the 1/2 inch and buy a 714. I don't know. What I do know is that I use my 700 A LOT. It was clunky at first but now I don't know what I would do without it.

I have 2 ATG guns, one carries the .5 inch tape and the other has the adapter for .25 inch tape. Yes, buy the adapter. It's more practical
1. Is your experience that this is so? TOTALLY!
2. What version do you recommend? 700 because you can buy the adapter to use the 1/4" tape.3. Where is the best place to purchase the thing?
4. Why would you NOT buy one? After using the ATG for years now, I don't see a reason why I shouldn't buy one.
5. You can laugh at me now. HAHAHAHA!
6. I did do a search but it didn't come up with anything for ATG in advanced or regular. Yeah, they use numbers to categorize their guns.
7. No really, it's ok to laugh at me. HAHAHAHAHA!
8. I would be using it mostly for cards or scrapbook pages. The exact same reason why I have 2 ATG 700s.
9. I'm feeling "Monkish" so I had to post this number. I'm feeling Monkish now too.
10. And this one. Sure
I spent about $60-$70 on adhesive in the first 6 months when I started papercrafting. Thought the ATG gun was too big and cumbersome for me because I have small hands. I have had my 3M ATG for 3 yrs now and never looked back. There is a learning curve but once you get the 'hang" of it, it is really the only way to go. Got mine when 3M was having problems with some kind of defect with the 714 but their customer service was awesome. I now have 2 714s - one for scrapbooking and one for cards.
Bought a generic ATG but was never happy with its use - my tape would wad up in uptake reel area, the tape would rise up on the outside edge and not roll properly to come off the spool. In general, just had more trouble than it was worth for my mental health. OP where/are loving their generic ATGs. Gave mine to a friend and doesn't seem to be having any trouble using it.
There is a pink 3M 714 ATG that some retailers are selling for under $30. I know that it is not supposed to be as sturdy as the red 714 but unless you are really rough with your tools, it should work for the crafter.
I have two of the ATG 700 guns, but would like to use the 1/4" tape in it. Has anyone used this gun with the adapter? If so, did it work well? It would be much cheaper to order the adapter than to order a whole new gun.
Thanks!
I have an older model ATG, accidentally ordered the 1/4" tape then had to find the adapter. It works great.

I have had the 714 for about 4 or 5 years now. The tape roll I have in there now is giving me fits, but I think I bought an off brand of tape. It was not wound onto the roll very well, and it kept breaking. I finallly gave up and took the roll off the gun. Now I just cut the tape off the roll and use it like score tape. It's kind of a pain, but I didn't want to waste the whole roll of tape! Anyway, this is the only problem I've ever had with it, and I think I'll stick with the 3M brand of tape from now on.

I know how you feel. I bought one of the highly recommended tapes on e-bay and have had several rolls break. I know I could have called them and probably got replacements, but quite frankly I don't want any more of their tape. I have 4 more rolls to go and then it's back to 3-M; it's the best IMHO
